Show 1 WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JANUARY 29, 1981 WITS Davis Doris Faee 'r Ids Big Games Whats By DAVE W IGHAM All The old KAYSV1LLE saying that its lonely at the top certainly doesn't apply to Region Four basketball as no less than four teams find themselves on top of the standings with 1 records. This ONE OF those four clubs is Davis who knocked off Logan last week to move into a tie with Ogden, Ben Lomond and Box Elder. Bear River is right behind waiting for one slip at with Logan in the cellar at Jazz? By DAVE WIGHAM This four way tie all came about last week when Ogden knocked off unbeaten Ben while Davis Lomond was beating Logan and Box Elder slipped past Bear River. 52-4- 6 popular decisions. FIRST PEOPLE were upset at the departing of one James Hardy. James was the type of player that turned the crowds on with his leaping ability and slam dunks. Problem with Mr. Hardy though was e that much of his show was during the warmups. Come game time, he didnt produce a real lot. Thus he was gone. Now the people are really up in arms over the departing of their local hero Ron Boone. Mr. Boone played with the defunct Utah Stars club and became some sort of local hero to some folks in Salt Lake City. DAVIS COULD get unwound from the mess at the top with a win over Bear River on Tuesday, this paper prints on Monday so we don't know who won. The Darts should have. But the next two games could go a long way in determining the Darts chances at the region crown. First they met a strong Box Elder club on Friday up on the Bees home floor and then next Tuesday they get a return engagement from Ben Lomond the club that beat Davis in the opener. pre-gam- CUTTING RON was the toughest choice that Frank Layden, the general manager of the Jazz, has had to make. Yet if you stop and think about it what other choice did he have? Ron is getting on in years, this may well have been his last in the NBA. All the other players are young and the Jazz think of themselves as a team of the future. , ir. Layle;n noted ,hat the reason they brought Ron to the Jazz was to nelp the youngsters along. This great veteran did just that as he helped many a rookie over the rough transition to professional basketball. Ron is a first class citizen but basketball-wis- e the Jazz made a move they felt they had to. A COUPLE of wins in these contests and the Darts could find themselves on top all alone, depending on what Ogden does. A split would leave them in the mess near the middle while two losses would pull them right down with the others. Box Elder poses as a threat to the Darts. Not only are the Bees a good club but they are extremely tough to beat on their own floor. However, on the bright side you can note that the Darts have already traveled to Logan and won. so foreign floors dont have a jinx over them. SPEAKING OF the Jazz, look at them on the television sometime. Trouble is the only games that are televised are against those opponents who the Jazz have very little, if any chance of winning. Teams like Los Angeles, Philly, Boston, the top clubs in the league are always their opponents. Why dont they show the Jazz on the road against teams like Dallas or Detroit, the type of clubs that the Jazz have a shot at winning. The television people will tell you that the reason is the rating system. People just dont want to see Dallas or Detroit. Maybe so, but this is one Jazz fan that would like to see them win on television just once this year. THEN A SUTTLE move took place on Dec. 20. There wasnt much written about it but it has turned into one of the best moves the Jazz has made. This was the day they moved Ben Poquette to forward instead of center. As a starting center, Ben averaged 8.2 points per outing and 7.5 rebounds. Since being moved to the forward slot, he is scoring 11.3 points per game and pulling down 9.5 rebounds. Those stats are through the 15 games he has started and not including the two games this past weekend. BEN IS A natural forward and is considered one of the best outside shooters in the league for a big guy. Word is on me to play uptight because Ill shoot THE BEES are blessed with one of the top players in the state in senior Mark Hill. The younger brother of Scott, who is playing for the U. ofU. Mark is a great shooter. Last week he scored a game high 32 points in leading his club past Bear River. Mark plays inside on offense and has great jumping ability to go with his 63" frame. If the middle gets clogged he's not afraid to go outside with his jump shot. Davis will counter with their Jazz run. Another local player, both live in Davis County, Allan Bristow, seems to have broken out of a mild slump. Everyone kept asking what happened to Allan. He hadnt started since Dec. 18 and as of that date had yet to score in double figures. He broke out of that last week in the Golden State game when he poured in 16 points, adding another double digit game to his credit the following night in Houston. ALL IN ALL the Jazz has made some wise, although at times unpopular, decisions. Its nice to have them around. For Davis, senior Lynn Lloyd is averaging about 12 points per game with Dave Bock and The Lancers and Falcons staged one of the great rival shootouts last week with Layton coming out on top after two overtimes. Here Dave Barney (24) looks to shoot as Kevin Britton tries to block. Lancers Head To Weber By DAVE WIGHAM Coach Doug LAYTON Moon of Layton must have some magic potion that he makes in his basement and feeds to his players just before game time. That's the only way to explain the success of his club thus far in region play. AFTER ALL these Lancers struggled through preseason, only won a single game. The Clearfield bunch were considered favorites to battle for the league title, and they will. It was another Custer against the Indians at the Little Big Horn only this time the Indians lost. A year ago Coach Moon spun his magic and guided his troops to a fourth place finish in the state event. This time around he might have outdone himself with this win. Doug has been around many years, more than he likes to admit, and he is indeed one of the finest coaches in the state. True his players must share in his credit, he'll be the first to give them all the credit. Too many times though the Betty Brogue received awards in filing and speedwrit-ing- , and appeared on the high honor roll. She is married to Lynn A. Brogue of Layton. Taylor, who is averaging 20.5 points per league outing including a season high 26 points last week against Logan. V'T' rather than drive," noted Ben. He failed to add that one of the reasons for this is the type of offense the scoring star, junior Brian as" coaches are overlooked in a big win but this man does it the majority of the time. TAKE NOTHING away from Clearfield, they played well enough to win, but in a big rivalry like this anything can happen. It was one of those games that most observers felt it was a shame someone had to lose.. Now all of a sudden the Lancers are right in the thick of the chase for a state berth. They have a region record, and both those losses came to the league leaders by a total of 12 points. Last week they lost by one point to Bonneville this week it was their turn to win the close one. NOW THE Lancers can take a bigger step to state this w eek when they travel to Weber to battle the Warrior club that has an identical region record. Currently these two clubs are in fourth spot behind Clearfield, Roy and Bonneville. The win over Clearfield was a team effort with five players scoring near the double digit area although Jeff Pearce stood a little ahead of the crowd with 22 points. For the most part of the night the Falcons backed away from Pearce at the top of the key and Jeff made them pay the price. Jeff is now the leading scorer on the Lancer club averaging 20.0 points per outing. BEHIND JEFF in the scoring department over Clearfield was Layne Sackett with 12, he's averaging 18.6 a game, Brian Cunningham had 1, his season high, Dave Barney poured in nine more, he's averaging 12.3, and Tom Watson added eight. This was a balanced attack for Layton as the Falcons didnt know who to stop. Just when one player cooled off a little one of the others took up the slack and started to pour the points in. Mike Moss came off the bench to score seven as the reservers got into the action. ALTHOUGH THE win was a big one for the Lancers they don't have time to sit back and enjoy it for very long. They have to knock off Weber to stay in the picture for a state berth. Weber has been up and down this year which has veteran coach Dick Connely a little upset. If you want to compare common opponents when the Warriors lost to Clearfield bv 15 a couole of weeks aeo. BIG MAN for the Warriors is senior Kelly Johnson wno will cause more than one problem for Layton. Being 6'5" is enough to keep Coach Moon awake at nights but add to that the fact that this guy can hit from anywhere in the opponents half of the floor and you can see why Coach Moon has his hands full. Wade Beus is another big gun for the Weber side so they are far from being a one man show. Beus scored 15 in the loss to Roy last week, as did Johnson, and these two will be the top scorers for the Warriors. ' Layton has a little momentum and confidence going for them as they travel up to Weber. Both sides realize that in order to stay in touch with the league leaders they need this THEN ON Tuesday the game that the Darts have been looking foward to takes place when Ben Lomond comes to town. The Scots won the first meeting between the two clubs and the Darts haven't 7 forgotten it. Most Davis fans w ill tell you the reason for the opening loss ' was simple, Brian Taylor was sick and didn't play. Well, the junior guard is back and will play against them this timef around. Lloyd, Hill and Bock all played well in the first meeting scoring in double figures and look for the same this time around. WITH TAYLOR back and Brent Hatch playing well the Darts are extremely tough to beat, especially on their home floor. Ben Lomond has been The Davis County Ski DAVIS KNOWS what it takes to win. Against Box Elder theyll need to stop the i Hijl (Agturist Bfn Lomotffl it's the Salisbury guy. They know the Bees will play a tough man to man defense while Ben Lomond will come up with something special for Taylor. The Darts want the region title and these two games could go a long way in determining if they get it or not.
