Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JANUARY 8, 1981 Davis Deer Count Up Coach Bender Resigns At VHS High Flying Darts By DAVE W1GHAM In a move that surprised a lot of people, Wade Bender resigned from all his coaching responsibilities at Viewmont this past week. Tackle Ben Lomond guardline. DAVE WIGHAM BIG MAN for the Darts is KAYSVILLE It's usually about this time of the year that folks start taking notice of the basketball team at Davis High. Things are different this year. Already the Darts have caught their attention. 6 MIKE GARDNER has his Darts flying high through the preseason slate and talk is the Dav is five are ready to make a challenge for the region crow n. First up in that quest for the title is a confrontation this Friday with Ben Lomond on the Scots' home floor. ON THE OTHER hand. Coach Bender has been coaching at View mont for some 12 years and just felt it was time to move on. Wade cited a couple of reasons for leaving coaching. He noted first of all that he has five children of his own who are growing up fast and he wanted to spend more time with them. ITS ALWAYS tough to beat them up at their place." noted Coach Gardner. They always seem to come up with a HE THEN ADDED that maybe some enthusiasm had gone. This past football season I worked with a different twist defensively when they face us. And we know theyll do something special against Taylor," he added. Mike went on to talk about the early success of his team. "When you stop and look at it we have several losses. One to Clearfield in the closing moments, and a couple to all good clubs. Then consider weve knocked off clubs like Woods Cross, who is a fine team. Yes. we have played well." young staff. They had so much enthusiasm and dedication, it was unreal. It really reminded me of myself some ten years ago. thought to myself that the program needs a coach like those young guys with their enthusiasm and desire to work hard." Wade himself had enthusiasm and was very dedicated this past season. Wade went on to think aloud. If you count the years 1 played football then for the past 22 years I have been involved in summer weight programs, two a day practices, then the seasons. It's time to spend some time doing something else. 1 View-mon- coach was concerned about their height. They have a Salisbury kid back from a year ago and then a Smith kid that played a lot. Both are around 64 and will give us problems inside." Each year the Scots have employed a special defense against the Darts and the Davis coaches are expecting the same this year. "We know theyll box and chase Taylor." Tavlor of course is the great junior guard for Davis who is HE HAS BEEN named Coach of the Year for baseball several times for his efforts but he still maintains its the kids that make it all worth while. "Those awards really mean very little compared to having a averaging right around player come up and thank you for your time and effort. Coach Bender had also served as an assistant football coach under several head men. Then this past year, Mr. Flake named Wade as his head man. Under the guidance of Wade, the Vikings finished fourth in their region with a 3 record then went on to peak in the state tournament, much like his baseball squads have a habit of doing, to place second. 18 points per outing for the Darts. Brian is the man they look to in tight situations and he usually responds well. AT 63 Brian causes problems for smaller guards who try to take him man for man but his main asset, besides his shooting, is his great passing ability. The Darts are far from a one man show though. Lance Hill and Lynn Lloyd are a couple of seniors who are playing great ball right now. Both are great hustlers and dedicated to any sport they participate in. Lance battles w ith the tall timber under the boards while Lynn uses his speed on the 2-- VTEVVMONT HADNT been to the state tournament in seven years. Coach Bender is quick to give the credit to his assistant coaches but one has to know that he had a great deal to do w ith their success this year. The coaching world loses a great man who has decided to spend more time with his own team at home. 6" David Bock who could be THERE APPEARS to be a drop in the number of buck deer surviving the hunt. Data for 1979 shows that there were 23.3 bucks per 100 does and in 1980 there were 17.5 bucks per 100 does. Even though it appears that anterless hunters in the county had a very successful year from checking season data, field observations, and reports from hunters, there appeared to be more deer on the Dav is County front in 1980 compared to the same time in 1979. If the number of deer observed is divided by the number of hours of effort expended and timesed by 100, a relative figure in deer observed per 100 hours effort can be obtained. In 1980, 3228.5 deer would have been observed per 100 hours effort had that many hours been spent counting deer in the county. the key to this battle. We need David in the middle for rebounding as well as scoring. Without him we have almost no height at all. He does get into foul trouble a little but hes working hard and is improving." noted his coach. Brad Caldwell is the other starter for Davis and he too works hard at both ends of the d floor. Although small for a he has the bulk to battle inside with anyone; an aggressive ball player who gives 100 percent. THE BENCH strength is solid with guys like Brent Hatch, who can play either guard or forward. Mike McGill and Chris Cottrell ready to come in and contribute. Davis is playing well as a team right now They are well disciplined and know what they have to do to win games. Davis has enjoy ed success early this year and it should continue on into league play. . When wild grasses and shrubs are removed and ornamental plants are introduced deer learn to eat what is available to them. Deer feed mainly at night and during the early morning and evening hours. It is at these times that they filter down through the gullies and oak brush patches which often adjoin roads, in order to access feeding areas. When crossing roads, many are hit by cars and killed. Thus far. 3 deer hav e been killed as compared to 15 deer in the same six month period of 1979. also indicating that there may be more deer wintering along the county face than last year. The winter so far has been very mild and little snow has accumulated allow ing deer to feed higher up on the mountain and cause less conflicts with home ow ners. . . FLIERS OF LAYTON Deer are remarkable animals when it comes to adapting to live w ith man if they are giv en a chance. One and a half to two year old does will normally have two fawns per year and sometimes three. A single fawn per doe is not normal and when widespread indicates poor reproduction. Observations show that the county's deer are still in the two to three fawn production range. IN 1979 only 1636.8 deer per 100 hours effort were recorded. These figures do not show' that there are 3228.5 deer or even 1636.8 deer in the county but what can be learned is that more deer were observed in less time counting in 1980 as compared to 1979. The 100 hours effort formula is used to determine in a more perceptible way if the observer is actually seeing more deer per time spent , since the number of hours spent classifying deer varies from year to year. Deer counts for post season are conducted on deer winter range from Weber Canyon to North Salt Lake and the same area is not examined twice in a row The number of hours spent and miles driven is recorded and deer are classified as to buck, doe, faw n, or unclassified. Counts can be made on foot or horseback but since a great deal of the countys winter t; IN TALKING about the Scots, the likeable Davis THIS WAS NOT an easy decision for Coach Bender, and his lovely wdfe Sue, to make. He had thought about it for seven weeks or more but over the Christmas holidays is when he made up his mind. Wade made his name in the coaching ranks in the baseball world. More times than not his Viking clubs were fighting for both the region and the state crown. He has sent more players onto college in his 12 years than most coaches. New THIS FAR this winter the bulk of the county's deer seemed to have moved onto winter range about the same time as last y ear w hich w as around the third week in November. Residents of the county should realize that some deer live vear round on winter range in the bench areas and orchard areas of the county . butt that the vast majority of the county's herd live above the 6000 foot level on the county 's mountains. 1 THE MOVE WILL take place immediately which means W'ade will not be directly involved with the baseball program. When Wade was named head football coach this past year, he stepped down as head baseball coach but was scheduled to be the assistant. However w ith this resignation, he will not be in baseball. If one looks at the football program, it came as a surprise that a one year head coach would resign especially when that man took the club to the state finals. HI range can be quickly observed by vehicle from the bench areas, this method has proven to be most effective. The Division of Wildlife Resources has finished conducting post season deer classification counts throughout the state. The Davis County count was completed on Dec. 9 w ith some interesting results. A total of 339 deer were counted in the 1980 count as compared to 311 for the 1979 count. The number of fawns per 100 does has dropped from 14.5 to 112.6 with a total of 142 fawns being classified in the 1980 count. TRUCK LOAD SHRIMP SALE Per Lb. Whole Med. 5 Lb.
