Show I WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, OCTOBER 2, 1 980 Clearfield Bounces Back By DAVE WIGHAM Coach CLEARFIELD Brent Hancock got his troops back on the winning path last week as his Falcons downed a good Sky View club but now the likeable coach wants to sec his club jump back into the title picture with a win over Roy this week. JUST WHEN some were starting to think that the quick start by these Falcons was a fluke they head up north and manhandle a strong Bobcat crew 28-They didnt just beat their opponents they completely dominated and destroyed them. That win put the Clearfield club in second place with a league mark while Roy and Bonneville continued to cruise realong with identical cords. A win over Roy would certainly throw the race into an nterestine chase. ROY THOUGH are considered one of the top clubs in the entire state with a balanced attack of passing and running. 0 Junior Wade Jacklin. the coache's son, is a good passer while running back Ken Hud a superb game in directing the dleston has become known as one of the best in the league. Last w eek it w as the arm and feet of Jacklin that was the main difference in their win over Weber. All the junior did was run for 80 yards and pass for another 175 yards in guiding his dub to their fourth straight victory of the year. Keep in mind this same Roy tl.ib di Ju t win a league contest a year ago and here they are now at the top of the heap. HUDDLESTON is a bull of a runner who ran wild against Layton the previous week. He has good speed and pow er to complement the passing game. hen it comes to top backs in this league though a coach would be hard fetched to find two better than Fred Cook and Bill Kelly. Cook is undoubtably one of the premiere backs in the state while Kelly can kill teams that key entirely on Cook. Both had super efforts in the Sky View win. THERE WILL be two good quarterbacks on the field in this battle with Clearfield's Milt Hill getting better with experience. Last week he played club. Shane Openshaw en- joyed another great day going both ways for the green and white. Defenses could play the key role in the outcome of this battle, both clubs have explosive offenses and both defenses w ill be pushed to their limits. Gary Benson, Dave Valentine, Ed Plantaric, Mark Carter and Openshaw will be trying to shut down the potent Roy attack while Bill Venstra. Paul Duke, Gary Anderson and company will be trying to stop Cook and Kelly. ROY HAS made a complete run-nin- g turnaround from a year ago while the Falcons have always fielded a strong competitive team. In Cook and Huddleston the fans will get to see two of the best backs in the area with both counting highly on their lines to create holes. THE GAME is almost a must win situation for the Falcons if they have any hopes of claiming the league title and Coach Hancock has a way of getting his troops ready for these must games. J.Cs Kavsville Presents Curcus U.S.A. Brian Murray (42) of Layton found the running hard against the front line of Bonneville in last weeks action. Jamie Oliverias (61) tries to help out with the blocking. ROUGHGOING Cross Country Gifted Athletes By DAVE WIGHAM Hats off to a group of young high school athletes that simply go out and do their thing each week without all the hoopla that goes along with some other sports on the prep scene. THE THING that these gifted athletes do is run cross country for their respective schools. Their meets are usually after school on Thursdays during the sophomore of junior varsity football games. You remember those guys and gals running around the track and then disappearing for about ten minutes then returning to run one more lap around the track. There are more people paying attention to the football game than there is watching these athletes run. None the less these athletes put in as much time, if not more, than any football player does during the week. DURING THE week when you're driving around town and you notice these guys and gals running throughout the street they aren't just your average jogger doing a light workout. They probably run on the average of six to ten miles a day. The course itself varies at each school but in any event the distance is about two and a half miles. These people do it for the love of running. There couldnt be any other reason. They certainly dont do it for the glory and the cheers of the crowds because there arent any. WITH THE exception of opposing coaches and runners very few know who the top runners at each school are. Believe me the competition is fierce and these athletes have pride. Cross country is both an individual event and a team event. The top five runners from each school records their finish to determine the outcome of the team standings. So if your runners finish in the top five then the team total would be 15 points. That puts the opponents at numbers six through ten for a total of 40 points. The low score wins the meet. AN INDIVIDUAL can win a meet, region and state but it takes the combined efforts of five runners to pull off the team win. These athletes are a different breed. They don't the get the pep rallies for them, they don't get ' crowds. But they certainly do get the self pride and satisfaction of a job well done. Kaipillc Utak (rc$tufooi) a scSLjutcentcvmtaf Braves Face West By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - When talking about his football team this season Paul Waite is direct, I still believe in these kids. They are proven winners and we know they can get the job done. ONE HAS to remember the injuries that have hit the Braves this season, although the coaches are definitely not using that as an excuse. Mike W'oodbury their big returning tightend has been out a couple of w'eeks and is doubtful for the West game. Jay McCan has a cast on his broken arm and Scott Sw ensen is still nursing a shoulder injury. Then there was the thing with the quarterback situation in which three players were hurt. THE quarterbacking situation hasn't been a concern for Coach Waite, "I couldn't be more pleased with the way Kevin Beyer has been playing. He's a Eggett that has impressed opposing coaches throughout the leaeue. SOME FEEL that the West and Bountiful game each year has been developing a rivalry but coach Waite doesnt agree. In all the years weve played them, last year was the first time we've beaten them. In any event word out of Salt Lake City is that the Westsid-er- s have been waiting ever since the Braves beat them in the state championship for this game. Mark Blosch, the guard and linebacker of the Panthers, is a great football player and he leads their defense in all cate- gories. Ford Huffaker has been improving his passing each week and Roger Shields Clowns Elpehants Lions Aerialists Jugglers Zebras Camels Giant Snakes A White Rhino Goats And More!!! jet in the backfield. KICK RETURNS have been good for the Panthers with sophomore Cory Norton rated as one of the best in the state at it. In each of the Panthers games he has set up scores with his punt returns. He returned a punt against Viewmont for a touchdown and a is a 90 Minutes AELEPHANTRIDES Part of Circus USA Fun Feature Kidi. 2 to 92, can ride a S ton elephant. Music from the mighty circus organ. The Braves will need to contain him. Players like Alan Meldrum, Matt Dalton, Kent Bagshaw, Chad Stapley, Rob Allred, Rex Remigi, Scott Fadilis and the other seniors are better football players than their record indicates. They need some momentum and confidence and a w in against West would be the right dosage. As their A couple of coach noted, catches here, not so many penalties and fumbles and this club could be on top. ABOUT THEIR upcoming game with the league leading West club the Braves head man feels more confident than the previous two weeks. At least we know what West will run. Viewmont made some drastic changes and Woods Cross threw some different things at hus. West will just run what they always have and try to out execute you." One change the Braves will have in the NJ'est game will be to move Steve Handley into the offensive backfield along with fellow junior Rob Eggett.
