Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, DECEMBER ap 27. 1979 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, DECEMBER 27, 1979 County Gals Pr JL Hold Basketball J CMeld Girls Tournament Considered Favorites In Region By DAVE WIGHAM - BasketILLARFIELD ball fans in the county will be treated again this week when BasMall the girls stage their first Davis County Invitational event the last few days of the By DAVE WIGHAM - CLEARFIELD Last year was billed as a so called down year for Clearfield girls basketball. After all Margo Jones was starting five underclassmen. If that was a down season watch out for this year. ALL OF the players are back off the club that placed second in the region a year ago. They lost both games to region champions Viewmont by one point each time. Its no wonder that the coaches in Region One are. indicating that the Falcons are loaded and will be extremely tough to compete with. This success hasnt come easy though as Margo has built up the program. Several years ago Jackie Beene led the Falcons to a state title and word is the Clearfield gals are in line for another first place trophy. NUCLEUS OF the club is in the two captains, Karleen Peart and Becky Spaulding. Karleen returns for her senior year following a great junior performance in which she averaged about 28 points per outing. College coaches are just waiting in the wings to sign this senior who spent her summer months learning more about the game at clinics the throughout country. At 5 10 she can play inside but with her shooting touch dont be surprised to see her outside. BECKY IS a 5 9 guard who likes to get out and run and picks up most of her points with layups. She is considered the spark plug of the group. Joining her on the guardline is senior Marco Lusk, who is considered to be the defensive wiz on the team, giving the Falcons a good tandem at the guardline. week. Cindy Rush is another returning player which gives them a great deal of experience and depth. A knee ticipate. The Wildcats simply felt they didn't want to participate. THIS WAS a shame since the top clubs from last year would have been in the event. Viewmont was in the finals of the 4A ranks while the Cats were in the finals of the 3A. It would have been great to have all the teams in the event. The tournament will begin with a 4 p.m. game on Thursday between Davis and Skyline. Little is known about some of the teams but the Skyline team already has a win over the strong Viewmont club this year. AT 5:30 p.m. the Bountiful ALL GAMES in the eight team tournament will be played at Clearfield High. Four games will be played both Thursday and Friday with the two championship games being held on Saturday. All six county teams were invited to the tournament and all but Woods Cross will par- injury has slowed her up a bit but shes back and playing hard. ANOTHER CINDY, this one Clark, is a good outside snooter who can be used when opponents go the zone defense look. Two other seniors who played junior varsity a year ago who give the Clearfield crew added strength off the bench are Kendahlle Brandenburg and Robin Murray. According to the coach others who could see action before the season is over are Donna Brown, Lindi Fisher, Evonne Anderson, Colleen Mewing, Lisa Manfull, Betty team takes on Roy. The Braves field a veteran team which is quick and who likes to run while the Roy club features a and young inexperienced team. the winners of these two games will meet on Friday at S: .ill w ith the losers going at 7 p.m. IN THE lower bracket the Clearlield team takes on Box Elder at 7 p.m. Clearfield fields a very strong club this year with all ot their players back trom a year ago. Little is known about the Bees club, but they would have to be great to beat the Falcons. In the final game at 8: 31) the l.a ton club squares otf with the Viewmont team. These two have met already this season with the Vikes winning but not as easy as many expected. THE TWO winners would face each other on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the first day losers playing at 4 p.r.i. On Saturday the cham-pmnshi- games begin at 7:30 p in. with the consolation championship at 6 p.m. SOME OT the top girls basketball teams in the state, both 3A and 4A, will be at this tournament. The winner of this event will know that they have a solid club. Yamada, Michelle Kelsey, Jodi Tillman, Jennifer Beene and Lori Hutchinson. COACH JONES is optimistic about the club this season and well she should be. With all the top players back from a year ago they will certainly be heard from before the state event is over.
