For additional information call Ronald W. vsb Holt at Back To School J Night THERE ARENT too many football coaches around that would want to be in the region with West, Bountiful, Viewmont, Highland, and Woods Cross. Yet this region is lower 3A ranks. supposed to be in the Cany it further, the defending state basketball team is Highland, again another 3A team . d THE RANKINGS are set up to even out the population, to let the schools compete against others more to their size. No one ever said that the bigger the school the better. Where in the handbook does it say that 4A rules the state? They are simply the bigger schools in regards to the number of enrolled students. Currently there are more 3A schools in the state than any other classification. -- Samuel Morgan Elementary will begin the new year with Back to School night scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., PTA Pres. Fran Brown announced. REMEMBER the state football playoffs of a year ago. Bountiful and West were both in the thick of the race for the 4A title. This year they are 3A yet the schools are the same, yet according to some reporters they have dropped. It would be interesting to find out just what the reporter believes these schools dropped. The only thing 1 can think of is the number of students enrolled. They are still rich in talent and tradition, they didnt drop in this category. THEY SIMPLY earned the right through the number of students in their school. Lancers (So To Mato By DAVE WIGHAM Last Saturday night the Lancers took their football club up into Idaho in a battle that was billed as the game of champions. Layton was the state football champion in Utah a year ago while their opponents Capital High won the Idaho state championship. IPS TOUGH to live up to that bill a year later though, especially when both clubs are hit hard by graduation. These two clubs lived up to their billing though as they battled each other down to the wire with the Idaho club LAYTON taking a victory over their Utah counterparts. LAYTON TOOK the early lead but then the Capital crew built up a solid lead and then had to hang on for their lives to win the contest. In fact the Layton crew did score what 27-2- 5 would have been the winning touchdown but a questionable clipping call nullified the play. Coach Hansen showed his powerful hasnt semifinal matchup. These two are always after one another because of the rich football tradition each school game running gone from last year as the Lancers picked up six yards or so on every carry. Hunters were reminded that they must have a plug in their gun allowing only three shots before reloading. Also, hunters should clean their birds immediately upon kill and hunters are urged to obey posted areas and refrain from shooting close to homes. 1 DOVE LIMITS By GARY R. BLODGETT success was spotty throughout Davis County over the LAYTON Bag weekend as the annual dove hunt opened Saturday morning .and will continue through Sept. 30. THE unincorporated area northeast of Layton between the east boundary of Hill AFB and U.S. Highway 89 showed mixed bags early Saturday. is going theres no reason to put it up. Coaches also praised the play of linemen Joe Coleflesh, Troy Moon and Gary Christiansen for their play both on offense and defense. Mark Bowman drew praises for his defensive play on the night. NO ONE was offering excuses for this loss but on the same line it still isnt known how good this Lancer club is. This week they host Skyline of Salt Lake City on their Lancer field. That means they dont have to face a six hour bus ride, which had to play its toll on the nine players that go both ways for them. They will also have the services of Kurt Gallegos in the secondary. He sat out the Idaho game with a slight injury. His experience will be needed to solidify that defensive back spot. SOME ARE billing this weeks game with Skyline as a grudge match, since the Lancers beat the Eagles a year ago in the state 27 $2.50 which includes booklets, IN ONE article last week a certain paper noted that it was the first meeting with Viewmont and Clearfield since the Vikings had dropped to 3A. Anyone who thinks going from 4A to 3A is dropping in some way should take another look at the situation. What difference does it make to anyone if a club is 3A? THEY HAVE the same coaches, so they didnt drop in leadership. No, I would definitely have to disagree, the Viewmont team didnt drop to the 3A ranks. No one did. Some hunters hardly got off a shot in the first two hours while other sportsmen were bagging their limits of ten birds each within minutes. It all depended on whether or not you got in the flight of g the little, birds. fast-flyin- BRENT AND Steve Bone, for example, had filled up with ten birds each early with a few of their birds dropping into a nearby reservoir which necessitated the young men to get a canoe and row out to retrieve their kill. Even while talking to these two hunters, a flock of some 10 to 12 birds flew overhead, well within shooting range. A few seconds later it sounded like the landing of Iwo Jima as two other hunters over the hill opened up on the hapless birds. DAVIS COUNTY Game Warden Allan Hash had his hands full checking hunters guns to be sure they were plugged, allowing only three shells to be housed or fired from the weapon without reloading.
