Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, JUNE 14, 1979 Bountiful Takes Second In Soccer Ml 9 By DAVE WIGHAM One Of The Most n Ashed Questions By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL fhtslime of the year revolves around the sport of baseball. More One of the most asked questions aroutitt specifically high school baseball. AS IT STANDS now the high school clubs get weathered out most of their season and then try to play all their games in a two week period. The weather here in Utah during the springtime just isnt what you would call ideal baseball weather. Some people have come up with the idea of having the school programs run in the summertime with fulltime certain teams. After all, the clubs in neighboring states all do it and they have the upper hand over Utah teams in regional competition. Well for the first time in many years Bountiful and Viewmont have combined their talents to form their Post 79 club. Not all the Braves players are on the club, they still have their juniors playing, but all the THAT BRINGS up the big question, what about this American Legion program? They call it that because the American Legion is supposed to run the league and sponsor the teams, but in reality very few Posts, as they are called, actually put any money into the program or have anything to do with it. True there are some Posts that put a lot of time and money into the program but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. seniors and graduates are playing with their Viking counterparts. MOST CLUBS have to come up with sponsors, and even at that they still have to rely on the high schools for uniforms and equipment. What one person, who is close to the situation, pointed out is that they form a league for high school aged kids, those that will be back the following year. Up in Ogden they are doing something like that, called the Prep THE OLDER people, those graduated from high school that year, seemed to be wrapped up in other things other than baseball. Work always seems to get in the way. The younger ones have jobs also but they still seem to have more time and desire, according to this source. High school coaches would certainly like to see their team for the coming season get a summer of playing tough competition under their belts. THIS NEW league would also cut out the possibility of a kid coming back from one year of collegfe and playing. According to some people this hurts the American Legion program. Something is wrong when the number of teams in the league drops from eight to six, which includes one new club. That means three, teams from the previous year dropped out. SOMEBODY OUGHT to take a long hard look at the way the American Legion program is going and come up with some ideas to improve it. Adult - BOUNTIFUL Bountiful city has always been known for their high school soccer teams but this past season an adult team from the city has changed that thinking a little. COMPETING IN the first division of the Utah League for the first time ever this group of soccer players served notice that theyll be around for a long time. The team placed fourth overall in the league, which consists of the top adult teams in the state. Only Alemania and Pan World placed higher than the Rowdies of Bountiful. Both of these organizations have been around for awhile so the newcomer on the block certainly got their attention in a hurry. JIM HILL, the starter for the varsity, holds down the pivot spot at second with Jim Dredge being his backup. Kevin Stitt and Gregg Hope are battling for the starting spot at shortstop with Stitt holding the upper hand right now while John Hadley holds down the hot box at third.
