Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, OCTOBER 12, 1978 woods Cross Holds Braves Gear For GLH23 Ara Vion On Tlie S'cy View Battle Fi:!:Kl:t8o3 Typewriter EM Homecoming By DAVE WIGHAM - By DAVE WIGHAM x few weeks ago one of the local high school coaches . ted me to start a or Reflex weekly poll in the v Hgeins! Tougii Deri; The main BOUNTIFUL thing on the coachs mind at Bountiful High this week is how to get their team to take this game with Sky View seriously. wdeh I Cl.pper would rate the top teams in the state. FIX LET the Salt Lake papers make fools out of r- niselves in this department, I'll make a fool of myself m orwitner way. The polls are a joke not only to me but to percent of the coaches. Gene Plaga of West saw his 'ups ranked number one in 4A after beating Skyline d tfien last week his team had to go into overtime to nut Higf land. After the game Gene had these comments, Our kids saw they were number one in the polls td f gored they had it made. They can take those polls d j ut it well anyway you get the message. THE Braves are in a tie for the league lead with a 3 record while the Bobcats are at the other end of the taAdd to this the ble at week after the Braves have their annual war with Layton. All tins points to one thing, the Bountiful players might very well overlook the Bobcats in looking forward to th.-igame with the Lancers TRIE - By DAVE V ' V " , Cross school in that this is HIGH AM - ' S, K WOODS CROSS Two weeks ago it looked like the MxxN Cross and Davis game would very' well mean the league championship Nowall of a sudden it turns out that the Wildcats must wm in order to keep their hopes aloe while the Darts aie at the top of Region Lour & - f Elder GOING INTO the Box ? mS in game the W ildcats were on the league play and year but then something hap peoed The Cats lost to the Bees in a close game and then the following Wedo.'sdav thev were ambushed b the Ugd. n crew When the dust had settled after these two en counters the Wildcats found themselves m the middle of the park with a 2 2 league record Meanwhile th I' ins were m going about their downing the South Cubs and then the Beats from Bear River and new the Darts find themselves at the top of the league with no one but Legal to keep them enmounv PART OE the Wildcat problem was caused wh. n 0 0 1 ' Y I; running back Jett Osiltr came down with a pop pi ct t a kneecap and wa-- , n hundred percent ag enM I Ider club, but th Cas are not a one man b am so j.l the blame cant be phe el on that Davis too was tuvw g nu i x PRO PROSPECT Larry Miller a linebacker for the BYU football team the past four years has an excellent chance of the first professional football player to have graduated from Bountiful High. mv playing days are over I still plan on lifting weights to stay in shape HE PLAYED a litt ie varsity as a freshman for the Cougars but then became a regular starter in his sophomore year It was during that year that he became involved m a bat tie with another sophomore linebacker, the middle backer for the Cougars, Rod Wood "As sophomores we had a rivalry going, but now we dont there is no real jealousy between us Larry is the weakside linebacker for BYU and thats where he wants to be, the middle backer is always getting double teamed and has to watch for the run, the strong side backer gets tied up with the tight end but wltere I'm at no one really ties me up and I can utilize my speed more and cover the backs running pass patterns MGHM By DAVE PROVO - A lot of Davis County football plavers continue their playing days after graduation from prep school in the college ranks but very seldom have any of them made it past the college level NEXT YEAR might be a first when Larry Miller graduates from Brigham Y'oung University and his services will be up for grabs by the professional teams Larry has been a standout linebacker for the Cougars for the past four years and indications are that the professional people have had their eyes on him for that period of time. LARRY STARTED his football career at Bountiful High but he earned more of a reputation on the basketball floor than he did on the football field. In fact as a Sophomore Larry was trying to decide whether or not to play football. He went to his friend Coach Phil Olsen and asked for his feelings and thoughts. Phil to this day still remembers the day when he told Larry, IIS THAT speed aspect that has the professional people talking, although he as big as he is, Larry still runs the 40 yard dash in 4 7 seconds, which anyone will tell you is a great time for a linebacker that b'g The pros have talked m me a little, mostly to the 'your future is in basketball or baseball For some reason though Larry stayed involved in the Braves football program for the next three years HIS VARSITY coach, Paul Waite, had nothing but praise for Miller. Coaih Waite him- know self had gone through the high school, college and then i used to cut people in half with his tai kling SIILL LARRV wasn't the biggest player on the Brace club, in fact in his senior ear at Bountiful he was listed as f5 and !H0 pounds, and that was soaking wet and in full LOACH LAV LEI Idwaids believes he has the best set of linebackers m the WAC with Miller having the best year of all of them Indeed the to professionals are rhump-nthe bits to get a Lnebacker that is 6'5, 2k1 pounds and is fast.
