Show -- WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, AUGUST 18. 1977 IS KUED 1? Outdoors Programs Clearfield Questions KUED television (Channel 7) recently announced a new By DAVE WIGHAM A couple of weeks ago, coaches around the area were predicting that the Clearfield football team was going to be one of the top teams in the area this coming season. THEN THEIR head coach handed in his resignation to pursue another career A new coach had been named. The big question in everyone's mind is how will all this affect the players. In meeting with some of the seniors last week they really didnt know what to expect They had only met with new head man Brent Hancock once. WHAT ABOUT i1!', Coach Hancock He comes to the Falcons via Weber Mate where he was an assistant under Dick Gwinn While wiih the Wildcats, Coach Hancock was in chaige of the quarterbacks and receivers He was the one that coached Rod Bockwoldt to all of his records. There is a rumor that Rod will join his former coach as an assistant. Some of the assistant loathes at Clearfield have decided not to return to the Falcons this ear The first thing Coach Hancock has to accomplish is securing a staff. THEN WHILE other teams are working and practicing on their systems, (oath Hancock will be trying to teach and install a new svstem to the haltons Lath coach has Ins own way of doing things on and off the field and for the first few weeks the players and coaches will be getting to know one another To make things worse the Falcons dont know whether their lop quarterback will play or not. Brian Johnson has undergone knee surgery in the off season and his doctor doesn't want him to play, but the final decision is Brian's to make and he indicated that he wasn't sure just what hell do yet WITH THE type ol teams many of the schools have returning this year a team needs all ihe time it has to prepare. The Falcons will definitely be at a disadvantage with their new coach While other schools are used to a system the Ealcons will be finding out what their system will be. Prior to his Weber State appointment Coach Hancock was a successful coach at Bonneville High in Ogden. He brings an impressive background to Ihe Falcons but it will take time to learn his way of doing things. The problem ntav be that the Clearfield team doesn't have that much time program series featuring the Utah outdoor scene. AT ALL of the schools, the weight programs are paying off. Never have I seen so many firmly built athletes than I did during this trip Not only are the big men huge, but even the little people are firmly built. The weight training program has definitely made a difference in high school players this year. COACHES WILL tell you that by increasing your strength it also increases your speed and endurance along with agility Years ago, when I played in high school, they didn't even have a weight room, let alone a training program. Nowadays its the only way to go to build up a program. All you would have to do is take one look at Layton's Chuck Fhin or Bountiful's Kevin Waters to see what the program can do Lhin has gone from a rather chubby 230 last year to a very solid 270 pounds this year. That's right, this junior for the Lancers is as solid as youll see, and Ihe coaches indicate that his speed and quickness has vastly improved WATERS is smaller but he is just as firmly built at 160 pounds. Last year Kevin was in the defensive bat kfield for ihe Braves and was considered a good hitler Thus year with his additional weight am) speed the coat hes t laim he will be even better this year Bob Berrera, at ( learfield looks in heller shape this year although he has pul on more weight He adds that he has added quickness to his actions along with additional strength VIEWMONT looks like a muscle beach pariv gang when you see them There are er few big people in Ihe Viking camp but everyone of them is solidly built Eaih plaver who has gone through the program usually adds about ten punds to his body weight and improves on his timing in the dashes Any high school, and college, coat h will tell ou the kev to a successful football program is to run a good weight training program All the high schools have the fat limes to run the program both during and after sc hool TO ADD spice or incentive to the weight lifting programs the high sc hools hold an annu.il enmpet ition year the Bountiful. avion am) Viewmont teams all fared well The lime and effort in the weight room will be paving off this year on the fool hall field LOWEST PRICE EVER h c ant Who non Ihe (treater Hartford Monon known Don Pearson - Manager ESTIMATES--773-856- 6 'stu or 394-658- 5 LAYTON, UTAH No Leaks No Seams No Maintenance Requires ipen (at he ho won Bill All-Sta- COACHES, Gwendon and Larry Hatch were pleased with the victory and felt the boys had worked hard for the much deserved players.
