We do a great dial of trouble here, but still, we believe there ' toi a good policeman. the ewer tieatmeiit system we must have, the heau--tak- e center we are going to build, and the city park titll Hew we would Ilk to have, move police services are going to cost mine money mere taxes but we hope, not $20,000 per year for a cimmuinitv as mall as this. The city at pte.-eis spending apptoximately $3. non per year on public safety. We do not believe the citizens are getting $ Jiio-- i woith of services from public safety, and do bee lieve that additional funds that might lie needl'd for a radio and car expenses, will help us receive man, two-wamoie value tioui the money already being spent. One of the situations that caused us to throw the police improvement matter into our hopper of suggestions for seveial months ago was the evident luck of control over traffic along main street and elsewhere in the comhere than where vve munity. We caught ourselves going fa-tknew policemen were controlling the speed, and we believe, io allow cats to exieed the posted limits, is to invite accidents. We would not want to, and we dont believe we could, point to any atcnhnts that have taken place and say they were the cau-- e of insufficient law enfoicement. Likewise, no one can are alive today that might have been a) how many per-ot- is dead, if law enforcement had not made them better drivers. To point to any specific reason for having a police officer ami argue its value one way or the other would he wrong, hut we think there are many valuable services which we need from a policeman. We could list some of them, however, such as control of main stieet parking- for everyones benefit, the fast and efficient assistance needed at the scene of all types of accidents, the protection of public buildings, homes and businesses against vandalism and other forms of abuse, the carrying out of city ordinances for the protection of all citizens, the work with young people (a good policeman, in our estimation, siuld s lie about youth leader and director), and to give cuuiteous advice and help to any citizen of the community in need of it. We believe a uniform is important for an officer for only one reason, that is in presenting the best appearance possible a- a representative of the city and city council. We believe a two-wa- y ladio is necessary for efficient work, but could probably wait until the department has made other adjustments. A car is necessary, hut it does not have to be a new one, and could be the property of the officer employed, such as is tlie present case. We do not know all the answers to this matter, and we feel our city councilnien are much more capable in regards to deciding the city's needs than we are, and we would be very happy to go along with anything they decide is lest for all of us. It is our opinion, however, that there is a need for more adequate law enforcement services in Kaysville, and we would like to see a well qualified man employed for eight hours daily on police work. The eight hours could lie divided between day and night duty as the council and officer felt necessary. We do not want to have anyone think we are trying to tell the council what to do, we would like to have the council consider our editorial suggestions along with those of any other citizen. prog ain not have - a need ike l 1 -- nt full-tim- y edi-toiia- ls or dent, Friday evening.
