And these riches go far beyond the mere pocket book. We are rich in having a good environment in which to grow our families. When was the last time we had anything likened unto a calamity to take place in Sanpete? That rare tornado we had a couple years back hardly even counts. And don't even consider that little glitch called holiday travel and hundreds of pieces of luggage delayed at our centers of wealth; namely, airports. This kind of complaining this time of year is akin to the wealthy man holding his aching, bulging belly from too much Christmas turkey, egg nogg and rum cake. He leans over his mansion's balcony and lambastes the distraught, hungry people in the street who are also holding their thin empty bellies and crying. The wealthy man chastises them by yelling out, "Quit pete County Sheriffs Department on the charge of assault. Bail was set at $1,850. We do still have our homes in tact and not buried under many acre feet of water, or snow, or mud, or whatever else Mother Nature can hurl upon us at any time. But guess what, she has- n't. And we still have our possessions and our faculties in tact. Be thankful for this oncoming year. Each day will be new. When it arrives, it will be called "the present." And this "present" will truly be God's "gift" to us. In the meantime, pray for the victims of this century's worst natural catastrophe. Pray for at least the 55,000 and their kith and kin who will not see tomorrow, this "present", this "gift" of life on Earth. It is the right thing to do. Geoffrey Pace, Ephraim 49 West Main Ml. (If I disliked it enough, I wouldnt be the last one to get out of bed nearly every day of the week, thereby earning the bed making job!) Some of the routine in our lives is a rhythm which is like a nice, comfortable blanket. It feels good, we know what to expect, and we know what we want and when we want it. We like to foster this type of routine - right down to our bathroom schedules. Our personal schedules become sacred. We watch certain television shows on certain days. We have church meetings, club meetings and card games tucked away neatly at certain times on certain days. And then right when we think weve got our comfy little lives in order - BOOM, along comes the New Years holiday. The holiday itself is not so bad. Its the tradition and expectation of new years resolutions that upsets our apple carts. Suddenly our tranquil routine is knocked on its ear by the urgent need to set goals that require an infusion of time, energy and resources. There is something magic about the day of Jan 1 on our calendars. That day seems to demand change. There must be magic involved. Why else would the change of date from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 - the passage of a single day, inspire millions to start and stop so many behaviors all at the same time. We break bad habits. We quit smoking, stop swearing, stop eating twinkies and stop drinking soda pop. We start healthy habits. We start exercising, attending church, eating oatmeal and taking vitamins. Some experts say it takes 21 days to break a bad habit. It takes about the same amount of time to form a healthy habit. Twenty-on- e days doesnt seem like a very long time - that is until you try going without chocolate for three weeks. So here we are, on the brink of another new year. Are you going to rock the boat of your routine? Ive been wondering about my boat. I usually set too many goals and somehow when those 21 days have gone by, I havent stuck to many, if any, of my resolutions. So this year, Im going to take it easy. I dont know what it is going to be yet, but its going to be in accordance with the famous KISS rule. (Keep It Simple Stupid.) I think Ill isolate one thing and see if I can succeed e for for the 21 days and test that theory of the breaking and making habits. Enjoy your new start as you hang up a new calendar this weekend. Dont be afraid to change your routine, especially if it involves a change for a happier, healthier life. Im not afraid. Im an expert at this. Ive got experience with the same resolutions recurring time and time again. Ive started and stopped the same behaviors over and over again for lots or years. Who knows though - something may stick this year. Behrmann explains that no profit organizations that arent in tne business of providing disaster aid often need to spend huge percentages of donations to develop infrastructure to serve victims, meaning more of the donor money will go to administration and less will go to those in need. Behrmann suggests potential Utah donors look at two primary, and normally very safe means for assisting disaster victims.
