Show 2 PYRAMID THE Thursday, October 21, 2004 COMMENTARY The devil is in the details Dear Editor: Its been said that the devil is in the details. That old adage couldnt be truer for credit card consumers these days. While most consumers shop for a credit card by comparing interest rates, the real costs may be hidden in the fine print. That's because as interest rates have become more competitive, card companies are increasingly using late fees and penalties like universal default to capture are not always a good indicator of what a credit card will truly cost. They need to be careful shoppers. They need to read ana ask about all the fine print, particularly the late fees and penalties, especially penalties like univer- credit.com. Under a universal default policy, some credit card companies automatically hike their customer's rate, sometimes to as high as 30 per- cent, for missing a payment, even if they missed a payment on a different card issued by a different company. That means even if a consumer was never late or missed a payment on a particular credit card, they could still be penalized with a dramatic interest rate hike on the balance due on that card for being late or missing a payment on another card. Consumers need to know sal default. Everybody is going to ball games, watching ball games or talking about ball games - so I will too. As my mom used to say, If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you do it too? 4) Avoidance of Real Life Responsibilities. What would you rather do, winterize your swamp cooler, rake leaves and plant bulbs or sit on your butt and eat nachos watching a ball game? 5) Character Building and Educational Aspects. Being a spectator at ball games builds character and teaches important life lessons. Philosophical, intellectual, and deep moral symbolism exist in every game. One cant help but be a better person as a result of watching a ball game. Like I say, these are all just possible answers to the question. It s possible that Im still going to be asking myself the question. But, as I think about it, Number five above is my best guess as the correct answer. You may have a differing opinion. ... I know de- being considered Some have claimed that President Bush snubbed" the United Nations when he ordered American troops to invade and conquer Iraq and capture Saddam Hussein. President Bush and other administration officials had repeatedly stated that the purpose of the war on Iraq was to disarm Saddam Hussein per United Nations Security Council Resolutions. The Bush administrations complaint with the UN was that is wasnt enforcing its own resolutions, so Bush did. Today, Iraq remains occupied by American forces. While our own military is short on necessities, the Bush I know I brought up this question a few weeks ago right here in this column. I guess I didnt adequately answer the question because Im still asking it. Ive thought about it and have come up with several possible answers as to why some of us are sports nuts? I actually dont think I really qualify as a bona fide sports nut, but I sometimes pretend to be one. I take that back. Im worse than a nut. Im a glutton for punishment. I go to BYU football games. So, anyway, here are the possible answers to the sports nut question: 1) Nature and Nurture. Its a genetic and environmental thing. This theory goes for most Yankee fans. They were born to Yankee fan parents and were nurtured in the Bronx Bomber culture. It can happen to anyone. Nothing with professionals has a but intensive chance to break tnis heartbreaking cycle. 2) Body Chemistry Issues. SNAD (Sports Nut Affective Disorder) is in the same league (no pun intended) as OC, ADD, SAS, SAD and a host of other maladies. Drug companies havent discovered a reliable medication yet to deal with the problem though sufferers continue to unsuccessfully experiment with alcohol as a possible cure. Practically speaking, SNAD victims have no alternative but to attend sporting events andor watch them on tele- tunities.
