Show PYRAMID THE 2 INSIDE Thursday, August 26, 2004 TARV By Merrill Ogden SANPETE County Fair time County fair time in Sanpete is a great time. At a time when some counties question whether to continue with the tradition of an annual county fair, Sanpetes fair seems to be strong and healthy. This fair week is full of entertainment and excitement for everyone. If youre a kid, when I say county fair and you hear carnival." Images of the zipper, ferris wheel are immediately conjurea up. My kids are a little older now so the carnival isnt the same draw as it used to be for them. But, I remember not p too many years ago, my kids would go literally for hours on the carnival rides. There was no stopping for food or anything else. It was amazing to see the motivation for getting the thrills out of riding those rides. (It would be nice if they were still satisfied with getting their thrills that inexpensively and easily.) As for me, the ferris wheel is my ride of choice at the carnival in my advanced years. I love it when the wheel stops with me at the top. It gives me a birds eye view of the fairgrounds. I can look mto the rodeo grounds. I can recognize and watch people as they mill around the carnival midway. To me, the ferris wheel is a calm, sensible amusement. Time was when I would ride the upside down for the entire duration of the ride and feel like I was in heaven. Times do change. Ironically, the ferris wheel is my wifes least favorite carnival ride. She feels like shes going to fall out as the car crests the top and starts downward. Something about that sensation freaks her out. In the past, my wife and I have made a deal that we can each choose one ride for both of us to enjoy together. I choose the ferris wheel, which she hates; ana she, to keep the ledger balanced, chooses the round-up- . The round-u- p is the ride that is like being strapped onto the edge of a giant record turntable set at 78 speed. (I know theres some of you younger readers who may not understand that metaphor. Ask someone from the prerl non-sto- rock-o-plane- s compact disc era.) Once they get you spinning and just when you think the centrifugal force is going to break your neck; they raise this monstrosity up on its side. At that point, I feel like an ant stuck on a cooling fan. When I get off that thing, Im so dizzy that I have to lie down somewhere and wait until the earth stops rotating 90 miles an hour beneath me. What could be more fun? Of course theres a lot more to the fair than the carnival. The rodeo is popular. The demolition derby is always a huge draw. For some reason, which is not entirely clear to me, we love to see cars bash into each other. What I really like about the fair is the old traditional fair fare. I enjoy strolling through the exhibition buildings. Its fun to see whcrs showing rabbits, pigeons, sheep, pigs, chickens and cattle. I have to see that prize winning zucchini squash. I want to see which bottle of club bug collecjam got a blue ribbon. Looking at the tions is always a highlight. Serious. Theres still time to get in on the fun of the Sanpete fair. Dont miss it. The big parade is Saturday and therell be plenty to see and do between now and then. Recent reports ranked Utah as the number one hungriest state in the nation for incidence of hunger and third in the incidence of food insecurity. More than 19,000 households statewide were distributed a food box from an emergency food pantry each month last year. Fresh produce helps to enhance the nutrition of these boxes. People frequently ask what they can do to make a difference. Growing and sharing your excess fruit and vegetables with disadvantaged households is a simple action step that anyone who grows a garden can take. Its a direct and positive contribution to the probn lem of hunger and in our state. Pleasant residents Dear Editor: Our family appreciated your friendsmp when Agnes Gillespie came to Mt. Pleasant in 1946 to be the bride of Mac Brown; then during the years she lived among you and the years some of you communicated with her when she returned to Belfast, Ireland. We especially appreciate your attendance at her graveside service held on Aug. 17, as well as the beautiful flowers and other membrances. Dorothy Lloyd, Salt Lake City Barbara Millward, Grantsville Fred Hiss, - A mother recently watched helplessly as her sens fever jumped to 105 degrees while he lay in a hospital bed with symptoms of meningitis. Little cud she know that the illness was a source of mosquito infected with West Nile virus. A few days after the cMd was released from Primary Childrens Medical Center, the mother learned that her son was the third person in Utah who tested positive for the illness this year. The virus can lead to meningitis in severe cases. She was astounded. Now she wants other parents to realize the seriousness of West Nile and take precautions. Parents are naive about West Nile virus. I was naive, she said. Now I put DEET on him every time he leaves the house. d ho-child- s Prices for the Salina Producers Livestock Auction Aug. 17 are as follows: Receipts: 758; last week: 523; last year: 850.
