Show PYRAMID THE 2 Thursday, May 27, 2004 Transient room tax disscussed by county commission by Jill Hansen M ANT- I- The transient room tax collection process was discussed at a recent county com- mission meeting, held May 18. Sanpete County currently pays the state a percentage of its collection fees from motels and restaurants and it is felt that Sanpete could bypass the state, since it already is doing careful monitoring and tracking of these monies, which would give Sanpete an additional three percent, or up to $2,000 per year from these taxes and also be more efficient. It was decided to replace the old ordinance regarding these taxes to provide new appeals, collection, reporting and budgeting procedures. The money would go into reserve funds instead of general funds and could be helpful with the current budget crunch facing many Utah counties. It was also decided that the Utah Association of Counties will continue to be a resource until the new ordinance is in place. Planning and zoning Lee Holmstead, planning and zoning director, approached the commission with a request for a subdivision amendment to a piece of property in the Palisade State Park area. This is basically a swapping of a very small parcel of land that will not affect neighboring areas and will benefit the park by way of road access. The planning commission has already approved This is move and the county commissioners agreed. Holmstead also requested a public hearing for Dannie and Jeanette Rasmussen for a Conditional Use permit for a home-base- d business. They are also in the process of constructing a permanent structure in Mt. Pleasant, but would like to continue selling out of their home. The hearing was approved to be held June 15, at 2 p.m. Approval was given for Dan Rasmussen to develop a minor subdivision outside Spring City, as all relevant paperwork has been completed. The paperwork still needs to be signed by the county clerk and the owner of the property, Osral Allred. Sheriff's department Sheriff Kay Larsen requested approval for a memorandum of understanding with the forest service. This memorandum would give the forest service the opportunity to deputize its agents to immediately deal with criminal activities or emergency situations until county officers are able to get up into the surrounding moun- tain areas to take over jurisdic- tion. Also, Larsen reported that his officers are being trained in these kinds of situations and will be on a rotation so everyone will get some mountain duty time. Linda Nielsen described how she is currently unable to pay the tax, penalties and interest accrued from al999 levy, for which she has no access to the relevant paperwork. She asked to make payments on this. The penalties and interest were waived, but the mortgage holder who offered to pay her taxes will be asked to do this and Nielsen will then reimburse the costs of $664.42 on a monthly basis. coun-tycolle- es. There was a recent meeting with the county library board at the college, along with President Benson and in the Vice-preside- o Wheeler, which yielded a vote of the board in favor of this project. Vincent brought statements from all board members which explained their positions. There is a lot of confusion regarding who the Bookmobile would be responsible to, what will happen to city libraries and how much responsibility the county will be committed to in the process. President Benson has a working plan that involves restoration money for the five-to-tw- clerks office. A request for a wage increase for Jon Eicher was postponed to be discussed in an Executive Session after the open meeting. Property deed Tom Lott approached commissioners with a continued request to make a correction deed to property he claims was libraries, for grants and funding sources outside of the county and for operating the Bookmobile out of Snow Colleges operation and management funds. t Carnegie-buil- misdeeded. There is an inventory of 38,000 books that the Bookmobile carries, which can be added to Snow Colleges collection, including a large supply of childrens books. This will greatly increase the countys ability to provide access to higher literacy and more information, including advanced technology. A new bus will be available in 2005 that will allow Vincent to increase his services. Apparently there was only a total of $480,000 throughout the state and 21 applications had been made, reducing the money available to Sanpete County. The Utah Highway Patrol is participating in Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE). It is a cooperative effort involving State Troopers from all 50 states and the Canadian Royal Mounted Police. This association began in 1977, and the UHP has been an actively participating member since 1978. It is a coordinated national effort designed to reduce the number of serious and fatal crashes that too often occur during major holiday weekends. The UHP generally sees a rise in alcohol and d crashes during the holidays. "These are also the weekends when many more families travel on our state highways, and the Interstate system," stated Colonel Scott T. Duncan, superintendent of the UHP. "Our citizens depend on us. The UHP troopers will be on patrol and working hard to detect and remove impaired drivers from our highways." "We are working to educate the public on the importance of buckling up, driving courteously, and sober," said Lt. McAfee, "Our continued goal this holiday season is to help travelers reach their destination safely and to reduce the number of crashes statewide." drug-relate- Market News 365-58- 0 Periodical postage paid UT Mt. 84647. Holmstead also reported that he has incorporated a subdivision regulations checklist with the PUDs checklist, but the only real differences are in road impacts and fire protec- tion. It was decided that since this is a summary of the current ordinances and not a change, the checklist could be approved without a public hearing. Approval was given to pay Wasatch Academy $90 for an ad in their fall sports roster, as it had previously been agreed to give all four high schools in the county the same amount of money for advertising in other publications. The commissioners then went into an Executive Session. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, June 1, in the county building. not. Sanpete is a great place for this concept. All you have to do is pull the trigger on the need for something. That means, tell someone what it is that you need. When you tell that one person, they will tell someone else and they will tell someone else and before you know it the universe is processing your request. Lets take a for instance. Lets say youre looking for someone to teach you how to yodel and play the banjo. Youve always wanted to yodel and play the banjo. Your spouse has always forbidden you from embarking on this phase of your but youve reached a point where theres no holding yourself back any longer., The desire need only be put out to the universe. You merely tell someone of your sincere aspiration to play the banjo. (Lets just do one thing at a time. Save the yodeling for later.) Once the universe receives the message, its unbelievable how quickly it branches through a network of people.
