Show THE 2 Ask a specialist Commentary I HEARD THERE IS AN ORGANISM IN GARDEN SOIL Reader reminds Congress of powers Editor Some members of Congress have decided to use their constitutional power to rein in the radical activism of federal courts. Senators Shelby Brownback Miller and Graham have introduced S. 2082 to "limit the jurisdiction of the Federal courts." House members Dear (R-Ala- .) (D-Ga.- ), Aderholt and Pence (R-Ala- .) (R-Ind- .) have introduced H.R. 3799 in their chamber to accomplish the same goal. These bills would remove the jurisdiction of the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, to review cases involving the "acknowledgement of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government" by an element or officer of federal, state, or local government. In other words, these bills would prohibit federal courts from reviewing cases such as Judge Roy Moore's acknowledgement of God as the source of our laws by displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom or courthouse. In addition, these bills specifically prohibit federal justices from basing their decisions on the laws of other nations. The Constitution's Article III, Section 2 grants power to Congress to issue such restrictions. Members of Congress should be reminded of the existence of this important portion of the Constitution while being urged to support these specific bills. Every Utahn should be alarmed by the number of people viewing these disgusting web sites, says Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. The Utah ICAC Task Force should be commended for doing everything possible to protect our children against these predators. Authorities discovered more than 23,000 individuals using their credit cards to view the child pornography sites. So far more than 700 arrests have been made in the United States. In April 2001, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip that a website was posting child pornography. Investigators traced the site to a web hosting service in Dallas, Texas and later discovered that a Santa Clara, California was company called providing credit card verification services for the subscribers to several child pornography sites. THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PREGNANT WOMEN. IS THIS TRUE? Answer by Clell Bagley, Utah State University Extension Veterinarian A protozoan organism called toxoplasma can be present in garden soil and can be harmful to the infants of pregnant women and those with a weakened immune system if proper precautions are not taken. Toxe sympoplasmosis causes toms, such as swollen lymph glands or muscle aches and pains that last a month or longer. It can also cause mental disabilities andor eye damage to infants who are infected while in the womb. More than 60 million people in the United States are likely carriers of the toxoplasma parasite, but very few have symptoms because the immune system usually' keeps the parasite from causing illness. Toxoplasma can exist in soil when infected cat feces are present. Outdoor cats that eat mice are the most likely carriers. A cat can become infected by eating infected prey or being fed raw or undercooked meat infected with the parasite. Not all cats shed this organism all the time. An infected cat only sheds the organism for a few weeks. However, once it is in the soil, it can survive several months to a year or more, in spite of warm or cold weather. Dog feces do not cause toxoplasmosis, but can cause other problems. Toxoplasmosis is caused by hand to mouth contamination, and can come from sources other than infected garden soil. ABC News anchor Peter Jennings, who last December anchored the prime time special "How to Get Fat Without Really Trying," will host. Judging by the scheduled program, the summit promises to be pep rally for media, nutrition activists, and policy makers - all agitating for a panoply of governy ment initiatives, including prohibiting junk food in school vending machines, federal funding for new bike trails and sidewalks, more demanding labels on foodstuffs, restrictive food marketing children, and prodding the food industry into more "responsible" behavior. In other words, bringing government between you and your waistline. Politicians have already climbed aboard. President Bush earmarked $200 million in his y meabudget for sures. State legislatures and school boards across the country have begun banning snacks and soda from school campuses and vending machines. Sen. Though it is a serious threat, toxoplasmosis can easily be prevented by taking the appropriate precautions. To be properly protected if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system, consider these tips. Va Always wear plastic or rubber gloves when gardening, and wash hands thoroughly when finished. Have someone else empty the cat litter if you have a house cat. Always wash your hands after petting or handling a cat. 'A When preparing raw meat, wash cutting boards, sinks, knives and other utensils thoroughly with soap and hot water to avoid other foods. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling raw meat. Vs Cook all meat thoroughly and until it is no longer pink in the center or until the juices become colorless. Do not taste meat before it is fully cooked. 'A To help prevent your cat from becoming infected with toxoplasma, keep it indoors and feed it dry or canned cat food. Vs Try to keep cats out of garden areas. Repellents are available, but it is impossible to guarantee they will work. It is best to assume the area is contaminated and always wear gloves and wash hands thoroughly. This is the wrong way to fight obesity. Instead of manipulating or intervening in the array of food options available to American consumers, our government ought to be working to foster a sense of responsibility in and ownership of our own But health and well-beinwe're doing just the opposite. For decades now, America's health care system has been migrating toward socialism. Your well-beinshape, and condition have increasingly been deemed matters of "public health," instead of matters of personal responsibility. Our lawmakers just enacted a huge entitlement that requires some people to pay for other people's medicine. Sen. Hillary Clinton just penned a lengthy article in the New York Times Magazine calling for yet more federal control of health care. All of the Democrat candidates for president boasted plans to push health care further into the public sector. More and more, states are preventing private health insurers from charging overweight and obese clients higher premiums, which effectively removes any financial incentive for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We're becoming less responsible for our own health, and more responsible for everyone else's. Your heart attack drives up the cost of my premiums and office visits. And if the government is paying for my medication, what incentive is there for me to put down the cheeseburger? This collective ownership of private health then paves the way for even more federal restrictions on consumer choice and civil liberties. We cruised the Western Caribbean. We had Belize Oty, Be- lize Roatan, Honduras, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel, Mexico as our ports of call. We also had a couple of days at sea. She carries about 2,300 passengers. Some ships in the line are bigger. Some are smaller. These passenger capacities are what got me thinking about Sanpete taking a vacation together. Imagine, if Sanpete filled up several cruise ships, we could all go cruising at the same time. Wed make world news. Of course, wed probably have to leave a few people here to maintain things. As finely tuned of a machine as Sanpete is, it couldnt run itself for seven days. For one thing, wed have to have people to feed our animals while we were gone. Dogs, cats, canaries, guinea pigs and goldfish would all have to be tended. Not to mention the farm livestock Wed probably need a few Sheriffs Office people to patrol to and make sure no one waltzed away with our our patio furniture. Some would have to stay back in Sanpete to care for people in the hospital. I believe that all the people who are very sensitive to motion sickness could be the volunteers to stay home. Wed have to think of an appropriate way to thank them - perhaps life time passes for the roller coaster at Lagoon? Isnt this a great idea? I think we could have a good time. Can you imagine all of Sanpete swarming into a port? It would be like an alien invasion. Wed have a terrific time. Think of it. Wed just empty out the county. Center Street, from 9 a.m. to noon. The purpose of the event is to help educate parents and children about general safety with a special focus on water safety. Water safety is a major concern for parents because drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death among children ages one to four. A child can drown in seconds, without parental supervision, said Bonnie Hargreaves, Utah County Safe Kids Chapter cochair. Two minutes following submersion, a child will lose consciousness. Irreversible brain damage occurs after four to six minutes. A free continental breakfast will be served at the event from 9 to 9:30 a.m. followed by four rotating water safety classes with raffles held at the end of each class. Prizes include carbon monoxide detectors, flashlights, child identification kits and other safety devices. Children will also be able to tour an ambulance and fire truck, learn the basics of bicycle safety through a bikescoot-e- r rodeo and have the chance to receive a free helmet.
