NHS delivered 14 large boxes of food to the Food Bank as well. The Food Bank is presently serving more than 600 families in the Sanpete County area, and is in direct need of support to keep the shelves stocked with food for the winter. The Wasatch Academy NHS encourages everyone in the county to get involved in supporting local families in need by donating foods and money to the Food Bank. Food Goodwin, Mary Bank representative, is thrilled with the service being provided by the Wasatch NHS. Its hard to believe that only 13 teens and their advisors could accomplish this much, she said. Utah Association of Counties Executive Director Brent Gardner says it is no surprise that there will be an increase and believes they are probably inevitable. Most counties in the state are keeping taxes where they are by cutting back, putting a freeze on hiring and using their savings. Four counties, Wasatch, Grand, Box Elder and Sanpete commissioners say there is nothing else they can do. Sanpete County commissioners say the increase would make up for revenue losses, help with capital improvements and replace federal funding. The increase would be approximately $59 on a $182,000 home. Its a pretty hefty insaid Commission crease, Chairman Bruce Blackham. My guts are still churning. Its really hard. Im sick about it. There has not been an increase in property taxes since 1988, but that does not make a tax hike any easier. I dont see why we need to have this big of an increase, said Terri Morris, Wales. It just doesnt make sense. Glen Morris added, Thats a lot because the economy here hasnt been doing too well. Ron Lamb, English professor at Snow College and of the Sanpete County Democratic Party, comsays the mission should have anticipated the need in previous years so taxpayers werent hit so hard all at once. Thats pretty extreme, It sounds Lamb stated. Thats nearly double nutty. what were paying. Blackham counters that the commission would be glad to listen to all proposals for cuts, but there isnt much more the county can do. Its kind of like a family trying to live off from 20 years ago," Blackham stated. vice-chairm- an pay-chec- ks North Sanpete School District releases yearly progress report MT. PLEASANT-Und- er the accountability provisions in die No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, all schools are evaluated for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Schools and districts are required to meet AYP criteria on three indicators - (1) participation in testing (2) language arts and mathematics Core CRT Test scores, and (3) either graduation rate for high school and districts or attendance rate for elementary and middlejunior high schools. This current report of AYP is based on student scores for tests taken in the spring of 2003. Note: Attendance and rate data for graduation school districts will not be used this year. There may be school results that seem confusing. A school may be doing a good job as a whole but miss the mark for a particular subgroup of students. Schools may also not make AYP because of numbers of students tested or not having acceptable levels on attendance or graduation rates. These and other factors determine if schools are making AYP. In North Sanpete School District, the following schools V made AYP as determined by student performance in all subgroups in the reported indicators: Mt. Pleasant Elementary School; Spring City Elementary School; Moroni Elementary School; Fountain Green Elementary School; Fairview Elementary School and North Sanpete Middle School. North Sanpete High School was deemed to have not made AYP according to NCLB only because the number of students participating in the testing was less than the 95 percent required, however, CRT test scores in math and language arts were above the required levels. Participation rate did exceed 90 percent. NCLB requires that Title 1 schools not making AYP offer additional options to parents and students. All Title 1 schools in North Sanpete School District made Adequate Yearly Progress. Fountain Green resident Myrth Oldroyd (front row far right), 88, has real cause for celebration with four all born in one year. Celebrating with her is her daughter, Myrna Nunley, (middle front row); Staci and Trenten Stephensen, (front row left) and back row: Lola Stewart, Kaelynn and Rylen Randall; Karen Hansen, Karol and Braxton Anderson; Reba Jensen and Jamie and Shalyce Cook. en |
