Show Page Two - The Pyramid - October 30, 2003 3E3S3FS33E3EMES crowd. Even if its just a publicity stunt, I think it would be a good idea. Actually, if it were just a publicity stunt, it would be the best idea. LaVerkin has gotten on the map with its desire to be a United Nations free a zone. Being t-saving time free zone to could be a spring-boar- d fame for Sanpete. Im thinking that the mental health of Sanpetes turkey population is reason enough alone for keeping an unchanging clock. I know from my reading that a poultry grower in Canada says that chickens "do not adapt to the changed clock and the last week of October is very frustrating for us." (Im wondering who told the chickens what time dayligh- time change. This week we were, again, suddenly plunged into early evening darkness. I have a hard time with this each autumn. It seems so late so early now. On the other hand, those of you who arise earlier than I do are getting an extra hour of daylight tacked onto your mornings now. This is especially good for school kids who have to be up and out early standing around shivering in their tee shirts at bus stops. Farmers dont care what time it is. Theyre a practical bunch. If its light out, they get up and go do the chores. When it starts to get dark, they finish what they need to do in the daylight. They would probably agree with the description I heard somewhere that daylig- time is like the old Indian squaw who cut off the end of her blanket and sewed it onto the other end in order to make the blanket longer. (I dont know why it needs to be an Indian, it could just as well have been an English woman, a Utah woman or a Sanpete man for that matter. But, I suppose an Indian blanket makes more sense than a ht-saving Caucasian blanket.) Actually, daylight-savin- g time has been around for a long time. Ben Franklin is generally credited with coming up with the idea. He was a real idea guy. (Think bifocal glasses, the lightning rod, swim fins and yes urinary catheters.) Lee t 4-- H weekends. There were more than ,650 Carnegie libraries built in the United States including 23 in Utah constructed over a period as well as 1 17-ye- ar some 650 in Great Britain and Ireland, 156 in Canada, and a handful in places like New Zealand, West Indies and Fiji. The first library was built in Scotland in 1881. In many small towns, the Carnegie Library was the most important piece of great architecture and often established standards of operation and building design that were used for many years in the construction of libraries in other communities. Most were inspired by the popular style of the period, with some including stained or leaded glass windows, high ceilings, and graceful woodwork. Others reflected regional style, such as the clean and lean Prairie School. "The Prairie School style was made famous by Frank Lloyd Wright," Roper says. "Mt. Pleasants library is a classic Prairie School design, one of three such libraries in the state, with Mt. Pleasants being at the top of the list." Mt. The Ephraim library was built in 1914 and 1915. "The Ephraim and Manti libraries both represent the classic architectural style that was popular among Carnegie libraries back then," Roper says. "They are rectangular in shape with symmetrical doors and windows. Most of the libraries were set up a half storey and would have stairs leading up to the door from the street. " About 20 years ago, there was a statewide effort to place all of Utahs Carnegie Libraries on the National Register of Historic Places. Since that time, no Carnegie libraries have been torn down. "They are still being used as libraries," Roper says, "adding some have been expanded and modified over the years to include access ramps for the disabled." They were all very well-bui- lt structures and have served their purpose well.
