Show t Page Six - The Pyramid - October 9, 2003 Lady Hawks tennis wins Region 8 championship by Jeff Ericksen Hawks down Emery by Doug Johnson CASTLE DAL- E- Normally a team doesnt have to learn how to deal with adversity while earning a lopsided 43-- 0 victory, but that was exactly the cast Oct. 3, as the North Sanpete Hawks demolished the Emery Spartans in Castle Dale. With 15 fourth quarter points and completing their shutout over the Spartans, North Sanpete learned that even without Brett Madsen, their field leader, they are still a pretty good football team. Madsen, who had missed only a handful of plays all season, was injured midway through the third period while playing defense and several other players stepped into leadership roles to keep the Hawks on track. "Trevor Johnson was such a calming influence in the huddle," said North Sanpete coach Mark Wootton. "Hes probably started 30 games, as a varsity player, so he knew what we needed to do. " Wootton went on to explain that "Brett is the heart of this team, and now several other kids have stepped up and shown they can lead." The North Sanpete offensive line, led by senior center Kyle Turpin, created holes for a pair of sophomore running backs to allow the Hawks to score touchdowns Both Lehi and North Sanpete were 2-- 1 in region play, but Lehi must travel to Delta Friday, Oct. 10 to face the Rabbits. A Lefti win could set up a three-wa- y tie for first place, while a Lehi loss could give North Sanpete sole possession of second place if they knock off the Dinos in two weeks. Delta had a bye week. halftime when Emerys Dave Justice caught a six-yatouchdown pass from Johnfirst son on the Hawks possession of the second half, and Church topped off the scamscoring with a the per midway through fourth period. A steady rain before the game and through the first quarter made ball handling difficult. Madsen, Church, Turpin all Schroeder and Toby recovered fumbles for the Hawks. Emery quarterback Bowie Jeffs fumbled the first snap of the game to set the tone for the Spartans. A wet ball led to a muffed snap on the Hawks first extra point and kicker Kyle Poulson didnt get a chance to even try. The Hawks went for two-poiconversions on their next four scorers, with Poulson throwing successfully to Wootton twice. Poulson finally got a chance to kick on the last Hawk score, making the most of it as he drilled the ball through the uprights to run his season total to 13 of rd 19-ya- The biggest surprise of came as winless Cedar City knocked off the only undefeated team in 3A with a 0 overtime win over Pine View. This week the Hawks return home to take on the Pleasant Grove Vikings in a game at 7 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 10. North Sanpete and Pleasant Grove have not faced off other than in 1950 and 51, when the Hawks clobbered the Vikings 51-- 7 in the first meeting, only to have the Vikings shut them out 0 the following year. PLEASAN- T- After much anticipation and waiting, the final count of team points came in and the North Sanpete Lady Hawk tennis team heaved a sigh of relief. Coach Ericksen and Coach Bentley slapped a high five and gave out hugs because the Lady Hawks had earned another region championship. This was one of the closest region tournaments in recent memory for Region 8. The team point final scores were: Region Champions-Nort- h Sanpete High School, with 10 points; second place, Delta High School, nine points; third place, Lehi High School, eight points; and the Emery Spartans in fourth place with three points. The Lehi Pioneers were in the drivers seat after the first round. They had four in the finals. Both Delta and North Sanpete had only three in the finals. When it was all said and done North Sanpete had two region champions, one in third singles and the other in second doubles. Delta ended up with two region champions also, at first and second singles. After having four potential champions in the finals, only one came away with the region title and that was in the first doubles category. In first singles, Jamie Earl, North Sanpete, faced off in the first round against Carly Oler. Carly got the 6-- 4. Then best of Jamie Jamie played Tiffany Frisbee from Emery in the consolation side of the bracket and beat her handily 6-That win gave Jamie the third place medal. Jamie earned one team point for the Hawks. Coach Bentley said, "Jamie has such a tough position to play. She has to play the best tennis player ftam-.eacteam and do it day.after day. She is such a resilient, dedicated tennis player. Without her to play first singles and give this Hawk team the depth it needs to be a strong team, I dont know where we would be. " Katie Black from Delta beat Carly Oler. from Lehi in the finals to take first place. In second singles, Carlee Earl, a sophomore and the sister of Jamie, younger placed third and earned one team point for the Hawks. First she squared off against Cami Timothy from Delta. 6-- 2, 2, 6-- 1. Carlee showed her inexperience and nervousness in her first match of the day and lost the first set Carlee showed her true grit and came back in the second set only to lose it Carlee then faced Trista Cowley from Emery in the consolation side of the bracket. Carlee stepped up to the challenge winning Carlee then waited to see if 0-- 6. 3-- 6. 6-- 2, 6-- 3. she had a playback for a true second place against the loser of the championship match. After beating Carlee, Cami Timothy from Delta went on to win first place beating, Whitney Roberts from Lehi. Carlee Earl, North Sanpete, then had the chance to play Whitney from Lehi for second place. In between rain delays, Carlee and Whitney played an extremely close match. The match finally ended with Lehi on top Andrea Peel, a junior from Mt. Pleasant, dominated the third singles category. She came home with an individual region championship and earned three team points for the Hawks. With her wicked backhand, groundstroke placement, and her consistent serve there was no match for her today. Her first victim was Eve Guymon of Emery High School. Eve greatly improved from their last season match but was still no match for Andrea. Andrea won the first set on a power overhead. That overhead drew a huge fist pump from Coach Ericksen, and from that point on there was no looking back! In the finals she played a girl she had never played and absolutely controlled the match from the first serve. "Andrea played with so much confidence and aggressiveness. She had a bounce to her step and a smile on her face that could be seen from behind her. It was so fun to watch her win region," stated Coach Ericksen. Andrea beat Destrey Downs, Lehi, in 8-- 6. the Finals 6-- 1. 6-- 3, Eve Guymon, Emery, played a crucial role in the team win of the North Sanpete Hawks. Eve played for true second against Destrey and beat her to take away a team point from the Lehi Another Pioneers. huge Emery win in second doubles took another team point away from Lehi. The Lehi duo had Lisa Dianes number this season, they gave Lisa and Diane their only two losses of the season. The tandem from Lehi played exceptionally well from the get go and Lisa and Diane were never able to recover. After a disappointing outing in the finals they had to turn around and play Delta for true second place. With much more confidence and the ability that had been demonstrated all season long, Lisa and Diane dominated. They won the playback match 0 and took home the and 8-- second place medals along with earning two team points for the Hawks. Continuing their dominant k play. Heather and Toni repeated as region champions in second doubles. In the first round they faced Gar-lic- Lehi. Precise groundstrokes and great shots overwhelmed the Delta duo and they succumbed to the talented Hawks Heather and Toni earned three important team points for the Hawks. The Lady Hawk tennis team has won nine region titles in a row. This one is special because it was so close and was really a total team effort, and a little luck with a few crucial wins by Emery over Lehi. The Hawks ended the season with 12 wins and five 6-- 0, 6-- 2. losses. The Hawks will travel to Salt Lake City this weekend to compete in the 3A State Tennis Tournament. Last year the Lady Hawks tied for fourth place overall in state as a team, tying their highest finish in North Sanpete High School history. The Hawks hope to surpass that this year with excellent play from their doubles and the singles girls stepping up to the challenge. Matches will start at Coach Mikes Tennis Academy and the 11th avenue courts at 10:30 a.m. Of worthy note, three North Sanpete Girls tennis players have been named In all of Academic 3 A 10 girls are chosen for this honor and this year three of the 10 were from North Sanpete High School.
