Mayor Cook stated that the city is in favor of the officer but has requested time for the council to discuss it. The council would like to know exactly what they will be getting. Pickett is still working on the proposal which would consolidate several towns contracting with the Sheriffs for department police services When the council asked Pickett if Gene Openshaw was going to take over police duties in Moroni he replied that he hadn't talked to him. Pickett realizes that the council has had bad experiences contracting before, but asked them to consider the proposal. He stated it was good economically, as town people pay for both sheriff and town police while county residents only pay for one The proposal would consolidate Moroni. Fountain Green, Wales. Jerusalem, and Freedom together with officers living in the area but alternating stations tour days in Fountain Green and four days in Moroni, while making tours through all towns. Officers would work shifts. Fountain Green has not yet approved the proposal either. Pickett is working to consolidate all Sanpete towns to contract with the Sheriff office and is expecting that to happen in around five years. ur Recreation district The council passed a motion to support Mont Wheelers attempt to create a special voting district and possibly attaching taxing authority to help fund a recreation project. EPHRAI- M- A The show is open to the public at the gallery located at 86 North Main, each Tuesday through Saturday, 11 to 6 p.m. Sesquicentennial Celebration coming in July is offering a reenactment trek of the first pioneers that came to the Sanpitch Valley in 1849. The trek is open to all who want to participate with their own wagons, horseback, buggies, handcarts or hiking. A limited number of wagons will be available for those who wish to rent a seat. Applications for seat rentals are due April 1 . All other applications are due May 1. Applications and information can be obtained by calling or On June 14. 1849, Chief Walker. the Utah Indian Chief from Sanpitch Valley.' and 12 pf his tribe members met in council at Salt Lake City with President Young, and other church officials. The Indians had come to request that the Mormon Leader send colonists down to their land to make settlements and teach Indians to live as the white men lived. On October 28. 1849, 224 pioneers left Salt Lake City for unknown wilderness en route to Sanpete Valley for the proposed colony. In commemoration of the original trek, the trek will begin on Wednesday evening. July 21, at Nephi, then proceed up Salt Creek Canyon on July 22 and camp near Fountain Green On Friday, the train will travel on the west side roads to a camp site south of Wales and reach Manti on Saturday, afternoon July 24, in time to participate in the city parade Each night there will be a campfire program with entertainment and history given of the pioneer trek and other happenings that occurred along the original trail.
