Sanpete earned 17 first downs compared to Lehis seven. Hawk punter Josh Madsen helped win the field position battle, averaging 44.7 yards with his three kicks. Lehis Jeremy Brown averaged 30.3 yards on his seven punts. The game puts both teams at 4 and 2 overall. The Hawks remain tied with Delta atop Region 8 with a league record of 2 and 0. Not a bad night, but combined with the minus 48 yards rushing, it spelled a long bus ride home for the Pioneers. The game was not close, and was a major humanitarian effort by coach Keith Uperesa to keep the game as close as it was. Snow has demoralized visiting 8 to teams bv a total count of 1 1 13. Played before a homecoming crowd, the Hawk defense was outstanding, keeping Lehi from scoring until the last three minutes of the game. Eleven sacks by the Hawk defenders resulted in Lehi ball carriers totaling minus 48 yards on 25 carries. Mark Noorlander and Nick Kowalski led the assault breaking through for three sacks boost Snow comfortably in the lead, 15 to 7. Snow wrapped up the half with two Josh Heupel touchdown passes to Darren DuBois and Jamison of 17 and 40 yards respectively to take a 29 to 7 lead into the locker room. Fred Salanoa relieved Heupel after the half as quarterback and quickly engineered two touchdown drives in the third quarter, finishing the first himself on a d run, then pitching to one-yar- Jamison for a scamper. Snows performance this year has been nothing short of dominating, their opponents over the first four games by an average margin of 28-ya- 47 to 10. The defensive unit has been solid, and the offense, at times, appears to be unstoppable. However. Uperesa knows the perils of complacency and the difficult task of playing Eastern Arizona on the road. MT PLEASAN- T- With two-thirof the regular season gone, the North Sanpete Hawks are gaining momentum on their run to the football playoffs. After contests dropping two in their first three games, the Hawks have put together three wins in a row, two of them avenging losses to rivals in last years games. In the last three games, the Hawks have beaten Richfield 35 to 6 (same score as last years game), Emery 34 to 8, and Lehi 27 to 8. The three game win streak has been impressive with the Hawks averaging 32 points per game. In fact, the Hawks are putting more than 34 points per game on the board. But building momentum toward the play offs must start with defense, and the Hawks are certainly rolling defensively. In the first three games, the defense surrendered three touchdowns each outing, but the last three contests have seen them give up only one touchdown per game. The defensive front, Devin Shepherd, Mike Beird, Nick Kowalski and Mark Noorlander, with Ikiaka Uperesa, Josh Madsen, Justin Meacham and Ray Johnson rotating into the fifth slot, has been outsized in every contest, but their quickness and conditioning have made it extremely difficult for the opposition to move the ball. Linebackers Matt Roberts, Ben Pehrson and Kade Church have been extremely reliable and have caused and recovered numerous fumbles. Commenting on the surprisingly effective play of his linemen, head coach Mark Wootton stated, "These guys are smaller than everyone they go up against, but our kids are so dedicated with their conditioning that it has made all the difference. non-leag- 1 1 3-- and 0. Thursday, the Hawk JV and freshman squads traveled to Lehi and were treated as badly as Lehis varsity was the next day in Mt. Pleasant. Lehis JV team defeated the Hawks, 32 to 14, and the Lehi freshmen triumphed, 49 to 12. Tuesday, the Hawk sophomore team traveled to Nephi and downed the Juab Wasp sophomores, 30 to 12. The Hawk defense forced three Wasp fumbles in the first quarter and went ahead on touchdowns by Clint Anderson and Darin Ivison. Just before the half, Clint Aime hit Jordan Washburn on a d halfback option pass. The Hawks final score came on another Ivison run. Lady Badgers lose to UVSC and SLCC EPHRAIM Lady Badgers will remember last weekends two losses to Utah Valley State College (UVSC) and Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Coach Les Calles and the Badgers can find solace in the fact that they can play with the nations upper echelon. In game one, the Lady Badgers were stymied early by the defensive efforts of UVSC. Snow's attack was either blocked at the net or snuffed out by a perfectly placed defender. Snow fell behind early. 0 to 3, but it didnt take long for the Lady Badgers to find a hole in their opponents defense as they came roaring back to score five of the next six points to lead 5 to 4. Utah Valley took control of the game after that when Snows passing went down hill. The Lady Wolverines employed a short-serv- e that confused Snow, disrupting their passing and giving them few good scoring opportunities. Snow never scored another point the rest of the game on their way to a 15 to 5 defeat. Game two was a mirror image of the first with UVSC building a 5 to 1 lead before Snow could figure out an answer to the short-servFinally, the Lady Badgers took charge going on an 8 to run to take a 9 to 6 lead, forcing a UVSC timeout. The Lady Wolverines came back tying the score at 13, then moving on to take the game. Down 2 and 0, Snow put up a valiant effort, only to lose the game and the match, 5 to 15, 13 to 15, 13 to 15. e. Ann Braithwaite led Snow offensively, notching nine kills over the three games, while Sharia Kauo came off the bench to garner high honors in assists, racking up 22 in just two games. The let down against UVSC didnt linger over when Snow came out against SLCC the following night. The Lady Badgers started a 5 to 1 lead before the Lady Bruins knew what hit them. Salt Lake did regroup to take the lead 6 to 5, but it was all Snow from there on out. The Lady Badgers stormed to a 15 to 7 win in game one and had all the momentum. Game two was one of the most amazing comebacks in Snow college history. The Lady Badgers trailed 10 to 1 when Snow went on a scoring rampage finishing with a 15 to 13 win to take a 2 to 0 lead. Game three. Snow fell behind early, 12 to 1, and though the crowd waited for another come back, the Lady Badgers lost 15 to 5. The Badgers could have won both games but lost 9 to 15, and 7 to 15. The Lady Badgers will host College of Eastern Utah on Thursday, Oct. 8, then travel to Dixie to play the Lady Rebels on Saturday. 1 Anyone can be at the helm Alien the sea is calm. Take Nick Kowalski for ex- ample, he weighs only about 170 pounds, but he squats over 400 pounds. No one can block him because hes so quick and strong." The Hawks are averaging 414 yards in total offense, 257 on the ground and 157 through the air, while holding their opponents to 222 yards per game, 121 running and 101 passing. One telling statistic showing the Hawks aggressive play of punting 12 times and not one punt return. Besides the superior play of their smallish line, perhaps the most pleasant surprise for the Hawks this year has been the emergence of junior quarterback, Brett Johnson, as a top flight field general. Johnson has completed 55 of his 94 passes for a completion average of 60 percent. He has 13 touchdown passes to his credit carry, and 121 yards per game. He has also grabbed 14 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Fullbacks Kade Church and Ben Pehrson have shared playing time, and are remarkably similar in their performance. Church has 232 yards on 41 carries and three touchdowns, while Pehrson has run for 214 yards on 41 carries for one touchdown. Church is tied with Olson at 5.7 yards per carry. Pehrson has another touchdown that came on a punt return against Emery. Johnsons favorite receivers are Nick Kowalski and Chris Anderson with 13 and 11 receptions. Kowalski has gained 177 yards and has four touchdowns to his credit, and Anderson has 137 yards and two touchdowns. Royal Nelson has eight catches for 114 yards for one touchdown, and he has another score on a kick off return against Wasatch. Rory Johnson has only three receptions, two of them have been for touchdowns. The Hawks play at Union this e Wednesday night in a Wootton Union calls the game. contest a "practice game," wanting mainly to get through it still healthy for the teams two remaining league games. He says, "Our guys are in shape, and I know they will continue working hard on their conditioning. How far they go now depends on how they compose themselves mentally." The Hawks travel to Price to take on Carbon in a league game on Oct. 65-ya- 94-ya- against only one interception. Johnson has also run for three touchdowns and is opportunistic, completing the big play when it is there. Applying the formula used by the NCAA to compute a quarterbacks passing efficiency, Johnson would have a rating of 173.6 which would put him in fourth place nationally if he were a collegian. Akili Smith of the University of Oregon leads the nation with a rating of 193.1. Senior running back, Garrett Olson, has run for more than 100 yards in every game after the first. Olson was expected to be the workhorse for the team, but the excellent play of the rest of the offense has made him even more effective. "The defenses cant put eight or nine guys on the line, or Brett (Johnson) will kill them, Wootton says. Olson has 728 yards on 127 carries and four touchdowns. He is averaging 5.7 yards per non-leagu- 15. The last regular season game of the year is shaping up to be a big one, as the Hawks will host Delta on Oct. 23. North Sanpete and Delta are presently tied atop Region 8 with records of 2 and 0.
