(Ive had some people tell me that some government officials act like they have absolute power. But thats a whole different story.) No, we are not in a kingdom, but we do have an abundance of "royalty" in Sanpete. This is the time of year when Sanpete communities are crowning new queens arid princesses and the like. Its a worthwhile tradition and provides great opportunities for the young women of the area. Some people criticize these pageants, saying that theyre demeaning to women and are sexist. I believe thats baloney. I say anything that promotes scholarship, personal talents and, yes, beauty, is worth supporting. The "beauty" part of these pageants seems to be the "burr under the saddle" of many of the pageant critics. The pageant trend of the past few years, has diminished the use of the term "beauty pageant". They are now "scholarship pageants". Someone told me recently that a pollster found that a majority of those polled felt that intelligence was more important than beauty in pageant contests. Jay Lenos response to that finding was that if intelligence is all that were interested in, we may as well broadcast the Miss America pageant over the radio only. When I was in college at USU, I attended a spring time pageant on campus. It was a two-pa- rt pageant; Miss USU s. Student Body and Miss As you can imagine, the event had little to do with intelligence. Doctor's discovery may end obesity - HILTON HEAD, S.C. A doctor believes that a natural formula containing the extract of a small Asian fruit can help cause significant weight loss. Anthony A. Conte, M.D. reported in an American Medical Journal that the x formula, now called 3000, caused patients to lose more than twice as much weight as those in a control group on the same fat reduced diet. Neither group was instructed to decrease the amount of food they ate or to increase their exercise levels. An article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says that you don't have to reduce the amount of food you eat to lose weight, provided that you limit the fat. Dr. Conte says that animal studies suggest the mechanism behind the weight reduction is due to interruption of the "Krebs Cycle", an important step in the body's fat storage process. He says it may work the same way in humans. According to Dr. Conte, "The best part of this unique discovery is that it is not a drug, but a dietary food supplement. The Asian fruit, called garcinia, is similar to citrus fruit found in the United States with one big exception-- - it may help some people fight obesity! While Dr. Conte's study may be preliminary, the exclusive North American distributor, x Phillips Gulf Corp., is calling the 3 000 supplement "Nature's Ideal Diet Aid." According to a spokesperson for the x 3000 is now availcompany, able through pharmacies and nutrition stores or call or visit www.phillipsgulf.com. x 3600 is available locally at: Tinoco Ascension, 37, Orem, for DUI; Nicolas Tinoco, 32, Moroni, for DUI; Arturo Aguilera, 21, Sanpete County, for open container, vehicle impounded for no licensed driver; vehicle driven by Daniel Hernandez, age unknown, impounded for no licensed driver. Charles Newbury, 37, Mt. On Easter, children in some countries roll Easter eggs against one another or down a hill. The egg that stays uncracked the longest is the winner. Many were still pending any action after six months, many required no litigation and many were plea bargained down or simply dismissed. Charges such as auto theft, distribution and possession of methamphetamine, cocaine and other controlled substances, illegal possession of a firearm, assault, domestic abuse and child abuse are not adequately prosecuted. We even had a known felon who obtained a court order requiring return of a firearm. There is no summary of the district court case load listing charges and outcome. Without this, productivity and outcomes cannot be tracked. But then, it appears that no one actually monitors the above. Some say lack of money to pay for manpower, equipment, prosecution or jail space are the cause. We disagree. Mt. Pleasant is a great example of a local police force of six officers funded by the town who many say refuse to address local crime. Many merchants on Main Street have been burglarized in the last year, yet only a cursory investigation of the crime scenes was done, public drug deals visible from Main Street, vandalism and loitering are not vigorously policed despite numerous complaints from merchants. Many critics say the city coun ' cil and mayor do not monitor the case load of local police and do not demand actual enforcement of the law for the populace in general. All this despite throwing a lot of money at the same problems. We spend more than $500,000 per year on our jail, sheriffs department and court system. These are fixed costs and wasted dollars when our legal system is inadequately utilized. Sanpete County has no county administrator to oversee productivity. The county commission is not able to monitor our county offices in depth. Many critics report that interven- - but sad aspect of this tloniy the child involved that is risks often our present and past elected sher iffs job was little more than to show up at the office to pick up e their mail. Most have from the separate occupations sheriffs office. This costs our taxpayers $39,000 per year. There are many more instances of poor job performance and fiscal irresponsibility, but that is another topic and will not be addressed here. The consequences of our inaction and apathy are far reaching. We send a message of tolerance towards crime which many will interpret as an invitation for rime. Traditionally many youth seek to explore and push vil their boundaries, often towards illegal means. It is essential that legal limits are visible and enforced, these are tomorrows parents and community leaders.
