Show Public Notice PUBLIC NOTICE SOUTH MANTI TIMBER SALVAGE SCOPING MANTI-LSAL NATIONAL FOREST The Manti-L- a Sal National Forest initiated scoping for the South Manti Timber Salvage project with a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact A Statement Federal in the (EIS) Register on February 17, 1998. The proposed action is to harvest approximately 3 1 million board feet (MM-Bof dead and dying Engelmann spruce from approximately 6,600 acres within the 25,000 acre South Manti analysis area both using ground based and aerial (helicopter) methods. As part of the project, approximately 10 miles of new road would be constructed, 20 miles of existing roads would be 8 and reconstructed miles of road used for harvest operations would be closed and reclaimed following harvest. An of epidemic spruce beetles has led to mortality of most spruce trees across portions of the Ferron-Pric- e and Sanpete Ranger Districts, and Sevier Sanpete Utah. An Counties, Environmental Assessment (EA) was prepared in 1996 to analyze the effects of timber sales within this approximately acre analysis area. Six sales were offered and awarded in 1996 based on the analysis contained in this EA. In 1997, a decision was made to. sell an additional 22 MMBF of dead, dying and at risk Engelmann spruce within the analysis area. That decision was not implemented. As a result of concerns raised and changes in condition (additional spruce mortality) which occurred after the EA was prepared, the decision was made to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the project. The Forest Service is seeking information and comments from Federal, State, and local agencies as well as individuals and organizations who may be interested in, or affected by the proposed action. The Forest Service invites written comments and suggestions related to the pro- -' posal and the area being Information analyzed. received will be used in 25,000 preparation of the Draft EIS and Final EIS. For most effective use, comments should be submitted to the Forest Service by March 19, 1998 (within 30 days from the date of publication of the Notice in the Federal Comments Register). that were made during preparation of the 1996 EA or later will be considered during preparation of the EIS. If you made comments during that time you do not need to resubmit them, however, if you have additional input it will be welcomed. Please submit your comments to Charlie Jankiewicz, Team Leader, Manti-L- a Sal National Forest, 599 West Price River Drive, Price, Utah 84501.
