The focus organizations throughout February and March is to contact area city councils, .and provide them with information on the goals and needs for area crime prevention. "We feel that with our local officials backing, we can get our communities involved and make a positive difference," explains Nielson. Local high schools were chosen as the gathering place for the organization because it was easier to reach individuals in the communities. Nielson states that the group still does not have any representation from Fountain Green, Freedom, Wales, Chester, Moroni, Spring City, Milbum and Indianola. For free enrollment, or for more information, contact the GED on TV hotline at The program allows individuals without a high school diploma to earn an equivalency certificate by studying at home from lessons that are broadcast twice a week on local television. Enrollment includes three workbooks that compliment the televised lessons and assistance finding additional help at local adult education programs. A specialist from Utah State University will speak and demonstrate basic and advanced tree care information for professionals and others who care for trees. Subjects will include tree planting, insect diagnosis, oaks of Utah, how trees grow and a tour of local trees. He also served in the military at San Luis Obispo, CA; Fort Bragg, NC; and Fort Sill, OK. He married Joyce Irons of Moroni on April 28, 1944, in the Manti LDS Temple. They lived in Mt. Pleasant for many years. Wesley Johansen FFA Week observed at high school MT. PLEASAN- T- The annu- al FFA week was held recently at North Sanpete High School. Many students showed their school spirit by participating in hat day, wrangler day, official dress day, drive the farm truck or tractor day and the sweetheart assembly. Stacy Pipher, Moroni, was chosen sweetheart queen and Jared Cook, Fountain Green, king. They were crowned at the assembly on Feb. 13 and again at the dance on Feb. 14. Winners of the wrangler contest. Josh Sorenson and Lynn-se- y Burningham, received gift certificates provided by Tuckers Emporium. North Sanpete and Gunnison FFA chapters, comprising 49 people, recently went to Denver, CO to attend the Denver Stock Show, rodeo and horse pulls. While in Denver they also attended the Denver Mint, The Cowboy Hall of Fame, Monfont Feedlot, the Coors facilities and Royal Gorge. Library storyland plans childrens Mexico theme MT. PLEASAN- T- Childrens Vacation to Storyland sponsored by the Mt. Pleasant Public Library will be held each Wednesday until March 11 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the library. This vacation trip will include teaching a dance to the music "The Mexican Hat Dance", games, Mexican folk stories and for dessert, salsa and chips. Pleasant in 1980, and enjoyed being back with their many and family members friends in the area. They spent many hours together farming, hunting, fishing and playing cards. Joyce died just months before celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. He is an avid card player and still meets with his buddies on their weekly card night. He is a member of the Mt. Pleasant Fourth LDS Ward. He has six children Bonnie (Wayne) Ware, Kathy (Stephen) Loveridge, Brent (Cindy) Johansen, Gregg Johansen. Keith (Coleen) Johansen and Darin (Lori) Johansen; 29 grandchildren and one MT. PLEASAN- T- Wesley Johansen celebrated his 80th birthday on Feb. 14, 1998, with a family dinner. He was bom Feb. 13, 1918, to Joseph and Sarah Olevia Johansen. He was a cattle rancher throughout his adult life, which brought him many hours of pleasure. He taught business classes at North Sanpete and Richfield,Orem schools. Many students have benefited from his talents in the classroom. MT. PLEASAN- T- Activities for senior citizens for the month of March are as follows: March 2, 9 a.m., quilting and Canasta at 1 p.m. at the center; March 3, service trip to Provo has been set ahead one week. Ed Roth, Ilene Frischknecht MP Seniors Enroll now for spring GED on TV Workshop on tree SALT LAKE CITUtah care is March 4 EPHRAI- M- New playground equipment is this years project for the Ephraim Youth City Council. They will be tearing out the current playground and replacing it with a safer and more enjoyable playground. They will be repairing the current swing set. The park will be geared for toddlers to age 12. It will also be handicapped assessable and compliant with the ADA guidelines. Cost of the playground will be $28,160. This includes installation, insurance and repair of the swings. The council plans to have the new park in by July 1 . Two scholarships that need special applications are the Prestigious Coca-Col- a Scholarship and The Glenda Wood Scholarship. To be eligible for the $3,000 Coca-Col- a Scholarship, which is a two-yeaward, an applicant must live in the Richfield Coca-Col- a service district which includes Sanpete, Sevier, Wayne, Millard and Piute counties and Panquitch. The Glenda Wood Scholarship is awarded to a rural community high school student. Both scholarship winners must possess an emphasis on community service and involvement, a strong work ethic, financial need and solid academic goals. On Tuesday, March 3, the pressure canning method will include meats and vegetables. Class participants may have their pressure canner lids tested for a small fee, if lids are brought to class. On March 10, preservation of tomato products, the hazards of this versatile fruit and salsas. On March 17, freezing of fruits, vegetables, meats and combination foods will be demonstrated. On March 24, dehydrating fruits, vegetables and meats are on the agenda. The last class, March 3 1 , will involve the Tasters Table and evaluation of many of the items that were canned in the previous classes. . February 25, 1998 Pinata with prizes inside is also included in this colorful trip to Mexico. "A trip to Grandmas house" is the theme for Wednesday, March 4. Grandma will have cookies, and a story about a small child who couldnt afford to ride the train the usual way, so she was mailed. The story is entitled "Mailing May. There will be other stories told, games, folding cloth and paper games, and songs. Michael will go on to compete at the state level on March 27 in the annual bee sponsored by the Deseret News. The winner of the state bee will go on to Washington D.C. to compete with other state winners. Judges for the contest were high school seniors Annie Madsen, Amy Ericksen and Jenny Aagard.
