PLEASANT "Sanpete Countys museums are home to some wonderful pioneer artifacts," according to Dan Burke, director of the Office of Museum Services m the states Department of Community and Economic Development Some collections are so haphazard. even museum directors do not know everything they house so Burke and the Sanpete Heritage Council are set to change that They have been meeting with directors and volunteers from museums in Spring City, Mt. Pleasant, Ephraim and Manti, teaching them to take inventory and catalog collections. Burke says "Once someone has seen pioneer artifacts at one place, they must have a reason to travel to the next museum. We want to look at what makes each museum unique," he continues. "We have started with the basics, taking inventory, finding POOR-COP- Y J- where the collections came from and improving the level of the performance," he states Some of the museums, such as those in Ephraim, already do a good job of identifying and displaying artifacts according to Burke They also know much of their history. Virginia Kirkman Nielson, director of the Ephraim museums. agrees She knows all about the wonderful things housed m Ephraim, having worked there since 1933. She talks of the antique quilts, clothing, riding crop handles, grindstones, hair pictures and art work housed in historic homes and log cabins. 'We met with the people in the state and county, and they gave us good information on how to document these artifacts." she says Most of the material is donated from families who know its background, she says. The long term goal is for each museum in Sanpete County to develop its own theme, that way travelers will have a reason to visit them all There also are plans to produce a booklet describing all of the county's collections, which will be distributed at all museums.
