Show irn&m Candidate airs election concerns The Pyramid - November 12, 1997 Page Two First, one person was denied voting an absentee ballot. She went to the county to obtain an absentee ballot and vote, but was told she had to come to the city office. She went to the city office and was told that it was too late to vote on an absentee ballot. Dear Editor: Commentary Merrill Ogden Working together Congratulations to the winner in the elections last week. Congratulations also to the "losers" for having had the gumption to toss their hats into the ring and make the political process viable. Elections in Sanpete, like many places, sometimes make for difficult decisions. We generally have good people running for office against each other. Its not usually a matter of choosing between good and bad. Its a case of arriving at an opinion of whos better at this time for office between two good options. I question the advisability of the standard party political designations in small town elections. Sometimes we get too hung up on the Democrat and Republican labels when we should be focusing on local issues and problems whose solutions have little to do with national party platforms. Maybe, Ill touch a nerve with some of you political party loyalists out there. But I believe wed be just as well served by going to nonpartisan elections in our municipal elections around the county. It would be like elections in high school for student government. We had the red party and the blue party. Candidates were judged on their individual merit. I believe that Richfield still goes with something like the Citizens Party and the Peoples Party for municipal elections. Any mention of politics deserves a quote from Abraham Lincoln. Our newly elected and officials around the county can take this to heart. "I desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end, when I come to lay down the reins of power. I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside me. " (Reply to the Missouri Committee of Seventy-1864- ) And, of course, if Im going to quote a Republican president; its only fair to quote a Democratic president. "The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people and a people strong enough and, well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over its government." My response to these question are as follows: I believe that if someone was denied their right to vote and had gone through the proper process to be able to vote, something must be done. I dont care who they vote for, as long as they are given their right to' vote. My son was turned away the first time, what would have' happened if he couldnt have gone back later? Were there others? I believe that Mayor Christensen had every right to be working at City Hall on election day in his office or the City Administration Office. I dont think it is proper, or within the scope of the rules for him to be conducting any type of affairs that put him in the public eye within 150 feet of the polling place. I know that Mayor Christensen knows the rules. I dont know whether this action had an impact on the election or not, but because of the closeness of the race, it is perceived that it may have by a large number of persons. I dont know the difference between having posters or pictures within 150 feet of the polls or standing there in person. I believe that because of the closeness of the election that I owe it to the people who supported me to ask if this was proper and if not, what is the remedy? If the election had been within one or two votes, maybe then it would be worth a recount. For 1 1 votes to improperly placed, I - think it is quite a stretch to ask for a recount. I would encourage you to talk to your City Council representatives if you have any concerns. I know I have talked to them and they have been very helpful and want to do what is right for everyone. sincere thanks to all the citi- zens of Mt.
