PLEASAN- T- The North Sanpete Hawks finished their regular cross country season with some individual outstanding performances and a Region 8 title to show for their hard work and persistence through the fall campaign. Hosting the region meet for the first time since 1994, the Hawks ran strong races across the board to defeat Emery, Richfield, Delta and Carbon and advance to todays UHSAA State Championships at Sugarhouse Park, Salt Lake City. In addition to the boys team win. freshman standout Khirsta Papenfuss earned a trip to the State meet with a third place overall finish in the girls' Region meet. She will represent North Sanpete as an individual. Senior Ben Curtis, Fairview, established a pace about one mile into the three-mil- e course that proved insurmountable for any rivals to match. Close behind him was Hawk sophomore Bret Mor-leMoroni. By two miles into the race, the Hawks had established positions that were looking difficult for other teams to penetrate, and indeed they could not. Emerys point total of 47 was the closest, compared to the Hawks 36 (low score wins). Richfield was third. Delta fourth, and Carbon fifth. Besides the finish of Curtis (17:47 for the three-mil- e course) and Morley (17:57), three other y, -2 Canyon Fuel Company, LLC, Skyline Mines , has openings for experienced mine maintenance mechanics and MSHA certified electricians. We knew if Ben and Bret could go top three, Ryan and Layne top 10 and David top 15, we were going to be tough to beat. In fact, we were," commented Coach Bill Bedford. "All our boys showed excellent improvement in their times since running this same course at our invitational meet in September." The top five finishers for the team plus varsity runners Preston Bailey and Brian Estey will represent the team at State this afternoon In the girls race, superb individual efforts were posted as well. Khirsta Papenfuss, Fountain Green, challenged the top runners from the Region in racing to a third-plac- e finish in 20:55. With less than a mile to go, she passed Carbon Highs standout Melanie Magnuson for second place, but could not maintain the position clear to the finish line. In addition, teammates Debbie Lee and Kaylin Fullmer raced positions, bravely for top-1- 0 ultimately placing 12th and 16th, respectively. Kyrna Papenfuss and Rachel Carter finished the team scoring, in which the Lady Hawks placed fifth as a team. "I have never seen such great individual efforts by our girls team before," Bedford said, "With such a young group we are well on our way towards being a team presence for the next few years. This years girls will be a great foundation for next years." Junior Summer Peterson, Ephraim, racing for the Wasatch Academy Tigers, also became a state championships qualifier on Friday, Oct. 17, as she recorded a top-1- 0 finish at the Region 15 meet in Panguitch. This will represent her second trip to State in as many years. In recording a strong time of 21:59 on the hilly 2.9 mile course, she took eighth place, behind the strong team contingent from Wayne High and one individual each from Milford and host Panguitch. The State Meet took place today, Oct. 22, at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.
