Merrill Ogden Personal touch Life m the 90s has many conveniences, but I wonder if we are losing the personal touch. The other night I fueled up my car without talking to a soul. Its becoming quite a common thing to do. 1 pulled into the gas station, inserted a credit card into the slot on the pump, waited a moment for processing and then filled my tank. I took the receipt which quickly printed and drove away. It was just me and the machine. The place was closed otherwise. There was no human interaction in the transaction. Other aspects of our lives have evolved to the same "humanless" condition. Banking. for example, is become more and more an activity' which requires little, if any, personal human interchange. Deposits can be mailed or dropped through deposit slots. Cash can be obtained from an automatic teller machine 24 hours a day. Account information can be accessed through automated phone systems or through personal computers e. on-lin- hookups enhance our ability to avoid contact with the real world. For the person who wants to visit another human being or family, its become almost intimidating. Were fearful that well interrupt someones movie or TV show. Years ago, the Mormon Church created a program establishing obligatory visiting back and forth within the congregations. The goal is that everyone receives a visit each month. My observation is that its difficult to keep participation high m the program because people either dont seem to know how to visit each other or dont have the time or desire. Sanpeters. I believe, are a step above the rest of the world in being personable and friendly. We are a bastion of personal good service. I have the hope that we will continue to make that friendly philosophy a hallmark of Sanpete. The convocation speaker at Snow College last week. Douglas H Baker, stressed the importance of sharing events as groups of people. There is no substitute for the common sharing of emotions and feelings in three dimensional "live and in person" settings. (Baker plays the part of Merlin in the show at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas. He gave a terrific program of singing and speaking. Watch the paper for upcoming convocations at Snow.) Lets keep doing things together in Sanpete live and in person. Lets get away from the TV once in a while. Lets attend plays, sporting events, concerts, school programs, etc. which let us experience the human element unedited and attachwithout computer ments.... Merrill ,.- mm. Speed has become a higher priority than the aesn thetics of contact. The Internet has opened a new way of marketing products and doing business without people meeting one er.. If you havent seen the movie "The Net" which is out on video, take a look at it. It depicts a scenario of how a person loses their identity partly because of being a hermit with a computer. Our home life and even the architecture of our houses reflect the trend toward isolation from other people. Many have the attitude that once they get home from work they are to be withdrawn from humanity. They dont want to hear the doorbell or phone nng. Houses arent built as often now with a front porch designed to invite and visitors sociability. "Porch-sitting- " has almost become a lost art.
