Show May 15. 1996 - Pyramid Recreation Guide - Page 13 Sanpetes scenic trails offer spectacular bicycling or walking Exciting, scenic rides and hikes begin at the back door of each of the Sanpetes historically quaint and charming towns and villages. The back roads throughout Sanpete County lead to historic communities which contain buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. In the mountains, trails and unpaved roads offer fat-tiriding and hiking trails through beautiful aspen groves and pine forests, with occasional glimpses of area wildlife. Near Fairview, the Milbum Loop and the Shelleyville Trail offer two scenic bicycle trails with a unique view of the valley. re Both are easy rides with most of the travel on pavement and no more than a 400-fochange in elevation. ot Milbum Loop The Milbum Loop is 13 miles to round trip and takes 2-three hours. It begins at the junction of Highways 31 and 91 in Fairview, and parallels the base National Forof the Manti-LaSest following the Sanpitch River. Milbum Valley was settled between 1875 and 1898 and was once larger than Fairview; but it was destroyed by a flood in 1902. Along die way, pioneer homes and working ranches can be seen. The remains of kilns used to fire limestone bricks rest on an old lime quarry hill. Tracks remain from the Milbum branch of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad completed in 1890. The old Milbum church, dedicated in 1944, was built with bricks from the Milbum school house which was erected in 1894. Skyline Drive For the more stalwart. Skyline Drive winds nearly 100 miles along the summit of the Wasatch Plateau, with altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 11,000 feet. The ridge provides magnificent panoramic views of Sanpete Valley, mile-dee- p canyons, lake-fille- d basins and lush Alpine meadows and forests.
