Show May Open house to honor DenaMarie, James Nelson Sat. , May 1 1 Mary Ann Christison named TESOL leader EPHRAIM Mary Ann Christison, professor of ESL and director of the International Center at Snow College, has recently been sworn in as President-eleof the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), according a Snow College press release. TESOL is an international professional organization whose mission is to strengthen the effective teaching and learning of English around the world while respecting individuals language has been a rights.Christison leader in TESOL and an active member of the profession for many years. She served on the Board of Directors from 1993-9as the TESOL 95 convention the TESOL 91 chairperson, associate chairperson and as a member of the TESOL summer institute faculty 1988-199She has been president of her local affiliated, Intermountain TESOL, and is currently the chair of the Interim Professional Development Committee. Christison has been a classroom teacher for 26 years and a teacher educator and language consultant for 15 years. Her diverse teaching background includes work in 2, adult education and higher education institutions. . Her consulting has taken her to 16 countries. She is a widely published author of teacher resource books and ct 6, professional articles and a member of the Association of International Educators, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum the American Development, Association of Applied Linguistics, and National Council for Teachers of English. She received a MA in Communications and a MA in TESL from Utah State University and a PhD in EnglishLinguistics from the University of Utah (U of U). Besides her work at Snow College, she is Adjunct Professor of Linguistics at the U of U. The nature of Christison s involvement in TESOL reflects the importance of professional development for English language teachers. As President-eleshe will focus on defining and developing TESOLs role in this vital area of the profession. Jeannette Mower to observe 80th birthday with family T. Jeannette FAIRVIE- WMower will celebrate her 80th birthday with a family dinner to be held May 4, 1996 by her family. She was bom May 7, 1916, to John Myron and Lois Ann Stevens Tanner of Faiiview. SPRING CIT- Y- Tara Syme, daughter of Courtney and Sheila Syme, Spring City, participated in commencement exercises at Brigham Young University (BYU) April 25 and 26. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in December, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She majored in history education and minored in geography education. She graduated from North Sanpete High School in 1991 and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Snow College in 1993. At BYU, she was named to the deans list and was awarded academic scholarships from William and Julia Hoops, Helen A. Hayes and Mary Fielding Smith.
