Rents have more than doubled in the past eight years in our area making it virtually impossible for many families to afford to live here without some sort of subsidy. The Section Eight rental subsidy program helps to stabilize families by providing them with rental assistance in housing that is safe, decent and affordable. I dont believe the local community relizes how heartbreaking it is to fellow students, faculty and staff when students have to leave Wasatch Academy. I am very sorry that these students who were released had to learn the hard way, but Im sure that a lesson has been learned, not only by students who were dismissed, but by those who saw it happen. Teenagers will make stupid mistakes wherever they are, hopefully lessons will be learned by all mistakes made. I also believe Chief Larsens implication that the drugs came from Wasatch Academy is just that, an implication. Hopefully this will be a lesson to us all, Section 8 housing needs Her grandparents are Harold and Jessie Jones, Mt. Pleasant. Letters Dear Editor: I am writing in response to the article, "Mt. Pleasant addresses vandalism loitering, problems," printed in the Nov. 29 issue of The Pyramid. Statements in this article made by Police Chief Kay Larsen implied that the drug problem in this community is at Wasatch Academy. I have lived in Mt. Pleasant for 14 years and have attended Wasatch Academy for four years. I think this is not solely a problem of Wasatch Academy, as implied by Chief Larsen, but a problem of the entire community of Mt. Pleasant and its surrounding areas. Wasatch Academy is like a family and it is very difficult to EPHRAI- M- Sanpete County Rotary Club Christmas dinner for Senior Citizens that was to be held Dec. 7, has been cancelled, according to Lynn Schiffman, spokesman. Thefts anger owners Dear Editor: Isnt it sad when people are so bored with life they have to ride around at night with their lights off to see what they can steal? We would like to thank the low life thieves who came on our property Saturday night and stole our "Santa in a sleigh" and "reindeer". At this time of the year when people go the extra to decorate their yards and homes for others to enjoy, its too bad we have to have people out there that have nothing better to do but steal. We hope you enjoy our Santa as much as we have. Mark and Ruth Vance Mt. Pleasant NIGHTIYUNTIPANUARY For example, families will not eat properly nor seek medical attention as often, or they will allow the utilities to become delinquent and shut off, or their car insurance to lapse in order to keep the rent up and not be evicted. There comes a break point when even doing all of that is not enough to hold things together and they do get evicted. At this point the family either moves in with friends and relatives or they become homeless. A whole new set of problems arise when the family is displaced from their home. All the way from kids not attending school, to health problems relating to sanitation, to increase in crime and family violence. Some studies show that it is to up four times as costly to solve a familys homeless problems than it is to keep them from becoming homeless in the first place through the rental subsidy program. For those who may feel this program fosters dependency, they should be advised that we administer a program wherein we contract with the family to provide the subsidy while they obtain training, educaskills. tion and It is working well and encourages people to get off the prois gram.
