"We really should be " doing better. This year's report identified eight factors that influence test scores. According to Christensen, the most important factors relate to the family and individual, including the home environment, student aptitude, family stability, and family income. "Test scores are as much a measure of a students home support .system as they are a measure of the quality of the school which a student attends," he noted. The low scores in languageEnglish are particularly troubling for two reasons. First, the state has been consistently low in this area since the testing began in 1990. Second, it is one of three areas used to determine the total basic battery score. Michael entered competition ranked third at his age level and took fourth place after four kimite matches. Hollee was ranked second in kimite sparring and third in kata and forms. She took second place in kata and stands as the national champion in intermediate ladies over 18 years of age. Rebecca received a participation medal after losing her second match in sudden death. The family plans to spend summer in continued training, studying under Sensei Rex and will be advancing in belt ranks this month.
