Calvin Hobbes Schools out... heavy consequences for those who might miss a game or a Calvins back! practice. "Coach, I cant make Thursdays game. I need to go to my moms funeral." "Sorry kid, but thats no excuse. Ill have to bench you for a week." Our children are the greatest assets we have in Sanpete. Befriend a kid this summer. Let him or her know that you believe in their worth and potential and give them something productive to do. Lets give the kids a break and perhaps theyll learn by examus one and ple give back Merrill. Look out! Schools out and the Sanpete kids are everywhere all day and all night. With no school to get up for in the mornings, the youth dont seem to have the motivation to hit the hay at night. Summer vacation is great for the kids in lots of ways. They can give their brains a change of pace. History, English and math give way to video games, water balloons and sleep-outThe local convenience store becomes "home room". The "No Loitering" signs suddenly have become more relevant. For some, summer jobs do bring in much needed cash for school clothes in the fall. Older kids learn how to tend younger siblings while many moms and dads are out slaving away earning the money for the house payment and ramen noodles. Most children love summer and the break from the pressures of the classroom. I love summer too. What I dont love are the hundred phone calls a day that I get at work from my kids. I think my children are terrific, but I dont think it would be so bad to try a summer with them in school. I know that there are some school districts which have d school. I assume the Sanpete districts have investigated that idea to alleviate the crowding that exists in some of our schools. Summer sports programs keep some of our kids occupied. Ball game schedules are the divine documents by which many families govern their lives. Weve been there and continue to be there. Heaven only knows the amount of juggling the families of Sanpete go through to accommoll date games. Some coaches are convinced that ball is life. There are s. year-roun- tee-ba- ate Did I miss anything? Been traveling the highways of this U.S. of A. since January. Im always warmed by the genuine affection of those I see when returning from my many travels. Sanpete is blessed by some very wonderful souls! And some not so wonderful... a good friend of mine leaving the area with a very bad collective feeling for the way in which they were mistreated. Rachel Powell, one of a dynamic group of young women in the BYU ballet program, doing a remarkable job! Currently getting instruction from a former Bolshoi dancer, so impressive is that program there in Provo. Rachel is the daughter of Randy and Leslie Powell, of Manti. Did you say Happy to Merrill Ogden? You should have Saturday last. Is anybody pulling for Orlando? Do they stand A chance? Where do you think the NAFTA highway will begin?
