The work has been carried out in a Efforts to make Horseshoe Mountain Days a celebration of cultural history was a wise initiative, in that it reflects authentic history of the region. The Center believes that with steady focus, the event can become the big one for tourists. In order to focus on the regions agricultural heritage, a farmers market is a great idea, but it should occur every weekend throughout the summer, not just once. There is a need for quality control, both in terms of particular amenities for visitors as well as for the whole experience the visitor be perceives. For example, will the new motel and restaurant high-quali- Jamie Wade Christensen, daughter of Wade and Ruth Christ- ensen, of Erda, UT, celebrated her first birthday on Dec. 15, 1994. Rather than highlight the coming of the railroad, the group suggests a program dealing with the impact of the railroad on Mt. Pleasant, which would include stories about its arrival and its , departure. Find the fit between tourism and the community. Currently, with bed and breakfast capacity for only a few people, Mt. Pleasant is to handle more than a few overnight guests. construction of the new motel will change this equation. Obviously, An important question to ask, though, is, does the community really want more visitors? A community survey is needed to assess peoples attitudes toward tourism and other topics, as well. A determination needs to be made of what local residents want when it comes to tourism How much? When? Every day or only on weekends? During all seasons, or only during the summer or winter? And how much are they willing to contribute to make tourism work? Collaborate. Mt. Pleasant should become more actively involved in the Sanpete Tourism Task Force and work with the tourism initiative. Christmas 1994 is history. Christmas is a magic season. The feelings are difficult to express. I feel a combination of nostalgia, hope and depleted resources. The best part of it all is the people part of Christmas. The little people part of Christmas is the best part of the people part of Christmas. We have a double whammy at our house. Our son Kent is the Christmas kid because he was born on Dec. 24. He turned six this year. Watching him experience the holiday was a joy and a burden. What enthusiasm. What annoyance. The countdown on the advent calendar was a major event. Now we face a new year, 1995. Its now the traditional time to think about resolutions. Its a natural point in time to think of such filings. I will be repeating what has become my traditional resolu- le tion. Its a quiet resolve to get into a regular exercise routine. (If I make it a high-profiloud resolve, people will actually expect me to do it.) We have heard much in the media lately about the anniversary of the World War Battle of the Bulge. I continue to fight my own personal battle of the same nature. I was the kid who had to run around in the shower to . get wet. I slept in the shade, of a barbed wire fence. I barely cast a shadow. I ate what I wanted when I wanted and how ever much of it I wanted. Times change. Im drinking Slim-Fafor breakfast and holding the line against going up another inch on my waist size. Food tastes really good to me. What happened to that skinny little kid? Another traditional resolution which I make and traditionally break is to consistently and regularly work on writing a novel. Someday (thats the key word here) I intend to write the great American novel which will make me rich and famous. Point is caring Dear Editor: The point is caring: caring enough to go out of your way, if that is what it takes to do the right thing; caring enough to drive carefully to assure, as much as possible, that an accident can be avoided; Caring enough to slow down, even when life gets hectic, and look at what is truly important; caring enough to apologize when Im comforted by the fact that Michener didnt start writing until he was about my age. Louis L Amour also was forty years old or so when he wrote his first novel as I understand it. Some people I know resolve not to make resolutions. Theres probably less frustration in taking that route. Whatever you resolve to do or not to do, allow me to wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Merrill Year (In Advance) year-5- 0( "The cats will eat the rats and the rats will eat the cats and we will get the skins. While the letter dealt with a particular business venture, the concept (raising cats) was so unique that I thought someone could find a useful Sanpete application and start an entire new industry here. Of course, earning as much as $8,200 a day (that was over 20 years ago so the potential is even greater now) might not interest everyone. And Im sure the animal rights activists will chastise me for this one, not to mention a lot of other special interest groups whose main focus is being politically correct. Then theres the whole new world that NAFTA has opened up. Maybe with the free trade agreements the chances of something like this wouldnt even work any more, but its worth a look-seIll let my readers decide if the letter was for real or.... it started out "Dear friend, I know you are always interested in looking for opportunities for investment. "I dont know if you would be interested in this, but I thought I would mention it to you because it could be a real sleeper in making a lot of money with very little investment. "A group of us are considering investing in a large cat ranch near Hermosillo, Mexico. It is our purpose to start rather small, with about one million cats. Each cat averages about 12 kittens a year; skins can be sold for about 20 cents ty quality products? More emphasis on marketing locally made products would help build more authenticity into the experience of visiting the region. Mormon furniture, yarn made from local wool, locally made crafts are all examples. By selling goods a tourist can buy anywhere else, Mt. Pleasant loses its status of being a special place. Although authentic, the depot has been moved from its original site and, therefore, its significance has been compromised. Moving other historic buildings to the current depot site would create a "fake" village. The depot by itself would make a fine visitors center, but adding other structures is not recommended. Preserve and protect historic resources. The Main Street restoration program is working well downtown, but attention needs to be paid to all the historic resources in the community. Make sites come alive. The Black Hawk Treaty is an example of meaningful interpretation. Walking tours, exhibits and museum displays can also make history come alive these are (USPS 365-58- Hamilton long-term-ca- re ar NORTH SANPETE HIGH SCHOOL: sweeper positions.
