Show Give kids regular checkups PALO While ALTO, CA healthy adults may be able to go a year or more between medical checkups, young children need to see their pediatrician more frequently. In fact, says Dr. Fernando Mendoza, associate professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, infants should be taken for a "well-baby- " visit every two months for the first six months. "Theres a lot of talk, often prompted by the managed care movement, that people should avoid overusing the health care system," notes Mendoza. "But kids still need frequent visits, and most health plans recognize this need and are willing to pay for it. Regular visits might avoid health " problems in the future. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends Salter Packard Childrens Hospital at Stanford. "With that much change occurring, its crucial that children be seen by a pediatric professional so that any abnormalities that muscle, might affect motor, vision or hearing development can be spotted early," he continued. that healthy newborns receive a physical exam two or three days after discharge, and then again before they reach one, two, four, six, nine, 12, 15 and 18 months of age. After that, the academy recommends less frequent visits. Children should be seen at 24 months, then annually to age six, followed by visits every two years for healthy kids to age 20. "A childs weight triples in the first year, and the next three years are the period of most rapid development in life," says Mendoza, who practices at Lucile "Equally important," he says, "is the need to begin and maintain an immunization schedule and to provide some health education on issues such as nutrition, or even the need to remove paint potentially toxic lead-basin the household." ed As children begin to enter adolescence, eight to 12 years old, and the visits wind down to an adult schedule of once every year or two, Mendoza has a further recommendation: childrens your "Support emerging independence by encouraging them to spend part of their routine visit alone with the caregiver. That should motivate them to begin taking charge of their own health, " Mendoza advises. Beware of mixing meds PALO ALTO, C- A- December 21, 1994 - The Pyramid - Page Its Beginning Over-the-count- er medicines are usually quite safe when taken as directed, but its important to give product labels an especially close look before taking two or more drugs at the same time, says a registered pharmacist at Stanford University Medical Center. Lisa Tuomi, drug information coordinator for Stanford Health Services, says a common hazard is combining an aspirin or aspirin substitute with a cold medicine that may contain the same ingredient. "Cold medications often contain aspirin or a similar analgesic, and if so, youll be getting a potentially dangerous overdose if you take both concurrently," she says. Side effects from excessive doses of aspirin include gastric bleeding or stomach irritation and ringing in the ears. She says look on labels to see if any of the active ingredients listed are the same on each medication. If so, a potentially excessive dose is likely. "It will also allow the child and caregiver to begin a dialogue about sensitive topics, such as sex or substance abuse, that a child might feel uncomfortable raising with a parent or guardian," he concluded.
