Show December 21, 1994 - The Pyramid - Page Five NS Sports update Snow College splits on the road by Gary Chidester EPHRAIM The Badgers came close to sweeping an important road trip, but came home with a much needed split. Snow College went on the road after splitting at home and faced the possibility of losing their next three in a row. Thanks to a great effort by the entire team, the Badgers were able to bounce back after losing to Salt 0 Lake to knock off Utah 2 in Scenic West Valley 67-7- 81-5- play. The Badgers looked good against a team that was "supposed" to be much better in Friday nights action. Snov, dominated the tempo and tht paint in the first half while build ing a five point lead. It looke like everything was going to continue the same in the second half until Marcel Johnson tool over, scoring 19 of his game high 27 points. The Badgers went cold for just five minutes in the game, but it was enough for the Bruins to take the lead and never give it up. Snow made a couple of runs and had chances to take the lead back, but turned the ball over or ' took a bad shot. "Weve got to learn to take care of the ball," said Head " Coach Jon Judkins. We make a great play on defense then come down and take a quick shot, or turn the ball over, or turn the ball right back over. We just cant make that many mistakes and still win games like this on the road." Snow College still had a chance when Brad Bodily hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining, and then stole the pass with six seconds left and trailing by just three. The Badgers ran a play to get three but the shot came up short. "I though we had another time out and we needed it," said Judkins. "We learned a lot from that game and I think we can beat them at home." Bodily was the player of the game with 23 points on 9 from die field and from the line, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Seth Miller had 13 points and Ryan Willden played a great game with 12 points and eight rebounds. There was a question of how Snow College would play at Utah Valley after coming up short on two tough outings, but all doubt 7-- 9-- Lady Badgers lose a pair by Gary Chidester EPHRAI- M- The Lady Badg- ers found the road in the Scenic West a lot tougher than playing at home when they dropped a pair to Salt Lake and Utah Valley last , weekend. Snow College came up short against Salt Lake on Friday 59-6- 7 after getting off to a good start, leading 12-- 4 to begin the game. "I thought we were going to i' be in good shape," said Head JoAnn Jeppson. "We 1 Coach ' started strong, ran the offense and got some easy shots. Then , ' we went through a slump where we didnt get a shot to fall. " The slump lasted long enough ' to fall behind by ten at die half. I Jeppson got the team back 1 ! together at halftime and the Lady Badgers made a run to get close again late in the game. Snow pulled to within four points with ; about six minutes left, but let the game slip away from them as t SLCC built back a lead. I Tiffanie Lorensen, who had 20 second-ha- lf points, led scoring nt j ! with 26 and added nine rebounds. Mandy Hodges had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Wendy Pher-so- n added nine points and five rebounds. Saturday night the Lady Badgers ran into a buzzsaw at Utah Valley and never really had much of a chance, losing The Lady Badgers hit on just four of their 26 shots in the second half and made just 23 percent of their shots for the entire game. "We really helped UVSC by taking bad shots and rushing the offense," said Jeppson. "We need to rest over Christmas break and think about what we need to do when we come back to start the new year." Hodges led the Lady Badgers with 12, followed by Shalaina Bany (9). Sunnie Lee had six points and a game high 14 rebounds with five assists. In the first quarter, the Templars went ahead after an 8 tie midway through the first quarter 1 at the end and were ahead of the period. Fast break baskets and close-i- n buckets produced the lead. Manti extended that lead in 4 the second quarter, taking a spread into the locker room at half time. After the break the Templars defense seemed to go to sleep. Gunnison made a run, had two baskets and cut the Manti lead to 6 at the end of the third quarter. And the Bulldogs continued to chop down the Manti edge in the fourth. Twice they caught up to within six points, but their pressure defense kept sending the Templars to the foul strip for the winning points. The big scorer for Manti was 4 Mike Barton. He hit for 22 points from close-i- n around the board, employing his superior height.
