Lifetime licenses halted SALT LAKE CIT- Y- Sale of Utah lifetime hunting and fishing licenses has been suspended, effective immediately. The bill (HB 361) passed in both the House and die Senate by unanimous vote of the members present. Governor Leavitt signed the bill which officially ended sale of the licenses March 1 . Division of Wildlife Resources Director Bob Valentine said the objection to the lifetime license was that it guaranteed a deer hunt opportunity for a select few. "We want to continue to provide as much hunting opportunity as possible to mainstream Utah deer hunters," said Valentine. He also noted that all existing lifetime licenses will remain valid. Fairview Elementary held its History Fair last week m preparation for the district competi- turn. Under the direction of Nancy Miner, over fourth and fifth grade students displayed projects based on the theme: "Geography in History-Peop- le, Places and Time". First place winners were: Justin Jacobson, Jesse Roberts, 40 State championship dreams fade as Manti eliminated n semi-fincompetition by Bruce Jennings MANTI The high school basketball forecasters had it figured, this way: that either Manti, Region 12s champion, or Beaver, Region 13s champion, would vie for the State 2A championship at Cedar City Saturday night. But it didnt quite work out that way. Manti lost in overtime to Monticello, a team it had defeated by 11 points in preseason play, and Beaver lost to Morgan, both losses coming in semi-fingames Friday night. So Saturday night, Morgan, a team Manti had defeated three times this year, and Monticello, a team Manti defeated once and Beaver defeated twice, played for the championship instead of the favorites. And there was an additional irony for the Templars, since David "Ole" Olsen, a Richfield businessman, and Dr. Leland Thompson, who practices dentistry in Ephraim, were members a generation ago, of the only Manti High School team that has won a state basketball championship. And theyre also fathers of sons Bryan Olsen and Wesley Thompson, who were top performers on this years Templar team that was apparently championship bound all season long. The two fathers agreed, sitting close by each other in the grandstand, that there was nothing they fir. al tured. Notice is hereby given that Ordinance No. 94-- 1 . T wanted much more than having their sons help the Templars to their second basketball championship. Beaver and Manti did get a chance to play Saturday night in An ordinance providing for the control of backflow and cross connections in Spring City will be acted upon by the Spring City Council at their April 7, 1 994 meeting. A copy of the ordinance is available for public review at consolation with Beaver beating the Templars despite WesMantis five ley Thompson led scoring with 16 points, but it just wasnt quite enough. What went wrong with this years team at the climax of the season? "They peaked too soon," one basketball buff said. "They were tired. It was jet lag," another added. "Next year well be rebuilding," says Coach Craig McAffee. Thats a fair assessment since the Templars were primarily a senior team, with only four juniors and a sophomore on the squad. But one of the juniors and the sophomore were a regular part of the rotation, and the JV team had an 18-- 0 record. So the fans are now looking ahead to next year while dismissing their current disappointment. And thats basketball in Sanpete. 61-6- 0, three-pointe- Stevie Stewart, Mallie Turpin, Rian Shelley, Edwin Christensen, Desilee Daley, Tiffany Curtis, Kristi Fry, Devon Venicosa, Jared Garlick, Alicia McKissick and Priscilla Terry, Their presentations were judged at the district contest in Moroni.
