Show Vandals burn Santas house Page Four - The Pyramid - March 24, 1993 MT. PLEASANT Arson is being suspected as the cause of a fast burning fire which destroyed the towns Santa Claus house early March 19. According to Fire Chief Kay Larsen, a night watchman from Wasatch Academy noticed the flames and called to report the fire at 2 a.m. Before fire fighters could respond, the small frame structure which was located on 100 South State was completely engulfed in flames. Chief Larsen said it appeared as though an accelerant had been used to torch the structure, although there was electricity to the building because it was being used as a crossing guard shelter and was equipped with an electric heater. About 10 volunteer firemen responded to the alarm. Both the large and small truck were employed. The structure will cost about $500 to rebuild if it is replaced. The fire also destroyed the crossing guards vest, road cones and hand-hel- d stop sign used to help children on their way to Mt. Pleasant Elementary School cross State Street safely. The incident was still under investigation Monday. The Santa house was built by the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce about 15 years ago for the seasonal visit of St. Nicholas. The building was used as a reception room where Santa greeted children, gave them candy and posed for pictures with them. The structure was moved to the school crossing zone this past winter and was being used as a temporary shelter for the crossing guard.
