Show WORK OF THE UTAH delegation AT washington in the framing of the new tariff bill with which congress congre qs has been engaged since march the interests of utah have been well con served when the revision of the tariff was first undertaken it was said by some that the influence of the new england states was wag so great that only the interests of that section would be considered in making the schedules and that the western states would suffer this pro diction has not been borne out industries have been well carld for and the people of this state no matter what their politics or what their views upon the tariff as ag an economic pro proposition posit on will be well pleased with the result senator reed smoot as a it member of the committee on finance has had hat an important tant part in the work of revising the tariff in framing framin g the wool lead silk and sugar schedules he has been a vei potent factor these arc are all interests in which his state is directly interested and he has worked insistently to protect them from any changes in duties which would prove detrimental so efficient was as senator smoots services that the leaders of the senate requested that he be named as one of the conferees to adjust the differences between the senate an and house louse and put the final touches upon the bill I 1 tho the conferees were selected in order of seniority and therefore the list did not include senator smoots name but he was called into the conference notwithstanding and assisted the conferees in their work chairman aldrich and the other veteran members of the committee had great faith in smoots ability and they appreciated his familiarity with the important items of the bill senator eorge sutherland h has as also taken a prominent part in the tariff legislation and has lent his aid in taking care of the interests of his state sutherland is rated as one of the big lawyers of the senate and his recent appointment as a it member of the judiciary committee shows how his colleagues appraise his legal ability he lie has made several speeches upon constitutional questions and has discussed the sched ules of the new bill in a manner that helped materially in getting them through the senate As a debater sutherland lanks high in congress and his speeches command attention in the house jo howell worked and voted with the leaders to enact a bill that would be favorable to the industries of utah he made a strong for the bill and used his influence in the interests of his constituents taken altogether no state in the union has u more conspicuous and efficient delegation in congram con grebs than has utah and the maults of their work show the manner in which their state in teresh sti have been conserved |
