PLEASAN- T- Candidates suspenseful campaigns are winding down and voters will be deciding which ones have made it past their scrutiny Tuesday, Nov. 8. Polls will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p m on election day. To be decided are local school board, county, state and national posts, three tax initiatives and two propositions. In county races, Mt. Blackham, Moroni, for two-yeincumbent county commissioner; Democrat Wanda Bartholomew, Manti, is being challenged by Republican, Raymond Martin, also Manti, for Sanpete County Clerk, and James R. (Jim) Cheney, Democrat, Fairview City Marshal and Sanpete Sheriffs Deputy Republican Wallace S. Buchanan, Manti, are vying for the office of Sanpete County Sheriff. In school board races, candidates include: North Sanpete, Precinct No. 1 (Mt. i , 5 " 1 and Spring City), Michael Canfield, Spring City, and Ann Deuel, Mt. Pleasant; Precinct No. 2, (Moroni 1 and 2), incumbent Frank Cook and Bernus Blackham; Precinct No. 3 (Mt. Pleasant 2 and 3), Elna McKay and Glenda Seely. In South Sanpete, school board candidates include: Boyd H. Brady and incumbent Dwight H. Inouye, Precinct No. 3 (Gunnison 1, 2, and Fayette). Millard), incumbent Joseph M. Moody, Republican, has two challengers, James J. Dewyze, Democrat, and Shana Rae Grant, Libertarian. In state races voters will determine if they want to retain I. Daniel Stewart and Michael D. Zimmerman to the office of Justice of the Supreme Court of Utah. In thenational election, incumbent Republicans Orrin G. Hatch and non-partis- Howard C. Nielson both have three challengers for those seats in the of U.S. Senate and House Representatives. In county nonpartisan school board races, three North Sanpete and one South Sanpete School Board seats will be determined in Tuesdays general election. Candidates include: North Sanpete, Precinct No. 1 (Mt. Pleasant 1 and Spring City), Michael Canfield, Spring City, and Ann Deuel, Mt. Pleasant; Precinct No. 2, (Moroni 1 and 2), incumbent Frank Cook and Bernus Blackham; Precinct No. 2 (Mt. Pleasant 2 and 3), Elna McKay and Glenda Seely. In South Sanpete incumbent Dwight H. Inouye and Boyd H. Brady are seeking ,the seat in Precinct No. 3 (Gunnison 1, 2, and Fayette). Michael Canfield Michael Canfield, a medical lab technician at Sanpete Valley Hospital, has lived in Spring City five years. He was born and raised retired construction operating engineer. He has been married to Ruby Hodges Willesen, also of Beaver, for 53 years, and they have one married daughter with two grandchildren, now residing in Las Vegas. Fairview PTA sets book fair Ray Nielsen Rep. Ray Nielsen, of Fairview, has spent 16 years in the Utah Legislature completing eight terms. He is the only local candidate running unopposed for his office. He received the Silver Goblet Award as Representative of the Year and the 1988 annual Democratic Banquet and the Utah Small Cities Award for Economic Development. During the last session of the legislature he successfully sponored a bill that will give incentives for new business, called the Enterprise Bill. Sanpete County has since been designated as one of the counties to benefit from this legislation. Challenging Senator Hatch are Democrat Brian H. Moss, American Robert J. Smith, and Socialist Workers, William M. Arth Congressman Nielsons opponents include Democrat Robert W. Stringham, American E. Dean Christensen, and Socialist Workers, .Judy Stranahan. Presidential candidates include with their running mates: George Bush and Dan Quayle, Republican; Michael S. Dukakis and Lloyd and canBentsen, Democratic; didates from American, Libertarian, New Alliance, National Economic Recovery, Independent, Socialist and Socialist Workers parties. YYanda Bartholomew Sanpete voters will also be turning their attention to the state and national candidates they want to represent them. They will be joining other Utah voters to decide who will lead the state the next four years. Those candidates include: for governor, incumbent Republican Norman H. Bangerter with W. Val Oveson lieutenant governor, or Democratic challengers, Ted Wilson for governor and his running mate Jim Davis. FAIRVIE- W- The Fairview Elementary School will be having a PTA meeting and book fair, Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p m. The PTA meeting will be A Discussion of Tax Initiatives, by Brent Thorne, North Sanpete School District superintendent, and Fairview City Councilman Eddie Cox. Mrs. Rosenlunds first and second grade class and Mrs. Jensens second grade will present a musical number. Babysitters will be provided at the school during the meeting if needed. Parents will be able to purchase books from the book fair. Students and parents may also buy books on Friday during the school day. Wallace Buchanan Other state candidates include: R. Paul Van Dam, Democrat, who is challenging incumbent Republican David L. Wilkinson for attorney general; Democrat Art Miller, who is opposing incumbent Republican Tom L. Allen, and Democrat Arthur L. Monson, who is running against incumbent Republican Edward T. Alter. Sanpete voters will also decide representation for the Utah Senate and House of Representatives. Incumbent Senator Cary G. who is seeking Peterson, his fifth term in the Utah Senate, is being opposed by Henry Willesen, Democrat, Beaver, for District 28 Cary Peterson Senator Cary Peterson, currently serving as Utah State Senate Majority Leader, has served four terms in the Utah Senate and has served on numerous legislative committee. He received an honorary degree from Snow College in 1987. A resident of Nephi, he grew up in rural Utah and is a farmer involved in both beef and wheat production. He has been a strong advocate of Central Utah during his years in the Senate. Still two days to register There are only two days left to register to vote in next weeks general election. Those who are planning to vote but may not have taken care of that detail may do so today and tomorrow at posted registration agents throughout the county from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. MT. PLEASANT in Brigham City, attended Utah State University and Weber State College and spent two years in the U.S Army He and his wife, Dee Ann, have eight children. Ann Deuel Ann Deuel, of Mt. Pleasant, is active in teacher parent organizations having served in the elementary PTA and is currently president of the middle school PTO. She has done other volunteer work at the school. Active in civic affairs, she is currently vice president of the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce. She is the mother of four children, all of whom are enrolled in one of the three district schools. Frank Cook term Seeking his third four-yea- r on the school board, Frank Cook is currently manager of Moroni Feed Companys Feed Division He had been with that company for 18 years and also raises about 40,000 turkeys annually. He is on the board of directors for Pacific Egg and Poultry and Utah Feed Manufacturers associations. Born and raised Fountain Green he graduated from North Sanpete High School and from the University of Utah with a degree in business management. Active in civic affairs he has been chairman of Moronis July 4 celebration and served as justice of the peace for seven years. He and his wife, Beryl, have four children, Bernus Blackham Bernus Blackham is retired from North Sanpete School District office where he worked for 20 years in such assignments as purchasing agent, data processing, computer director, ffederal programs, buildings and grounds director and transportation supervisor. He has also been a school principal serving for 10 years Glenda Seely Elna McKay Ann Deuel Michael Canfield Those wishing to register must be a United States citizen, be a Utah resident for at least 30 days immediately before the next election, be at least 18 years old by the next election and live in a specific voting district in Utah. Three North Sanpete board seats to be decided MT. PLEASANT HankWillesen Henry Hank Willesen was born in Sanpete County and has lived in Beaver most of his adult life. Former Beaver City councilman, he is currently chairman of Utah Seniors Legislature, and serves as a member of the Southwestern Utah Private Industry Council. Malstrom, Libertarian, and Merrill Cook and Lee Allen, Independent. James Cheney (Juab, Sanpete, Sevier, Millard, Piute, Wayne and Beaver counties). is Rep. Ray Nielsen, running unopposed for District 69 Utah House of Representatives (part of Sanpete, Emery and Carbon counties). In District 68 (part of Sanpete 'and Sevier, Juab and in the Uintah and Sevier school districts. He has lived in Moroni for the past 20 years. He and his wife, Marilyn, have five children and three grandchildren. Elna McKay Elna McKay has worked for Granite School District for seven years as a secretary and has been a PTA president in the North Sanpete School District. A business owner, she has served as vice president of Mt. Pleasants Chamber of Commerce and is currently on the board of directors. She has also worked on the citys July 4 committee. She is currently loan secretary for Far West Bank. She is married to Charles A. McKay and they have four children, all of whom graduated from North Sanpete.
