The trailer will still be used as an information booth during celebrations. More candidates file for board, county seats Commissioner Robert has filed for the Bessey, four-yecounty commission seat and Frank Cook, Moroni, is seeking his third term on the North Sanpete School Board as the April 15 filing deadline approaches. Bessey who is completing his first two year seat, is unchallenged in his bid for Bessey, a teacher at Manti High School, is a lifetime Manti resident. He has also served as Manti mayor and councilman and of the Republican MANTI ar vice-chairm- Party.' Bessey and incumbent Dr. are Wendell McGarry, both running unopposed, as of Monday. Frank Cook, is being challenged by Bemus Blackham for the North Sanpete School Board Moroni Precinct 2 seat. Others who have filed as of Monday include, Deputy Wallace S. and Fairview Buchanan, Marshal James R. (Jim) Cheney, Democrat for Sanpete County Sheriff. County Sheriff Chuck declared his Ramsey, candidacy for the two year post, but has not yet filed because of a state law requiring a years residency before filing. He was appointed last year to fill the unexpired term of David Bailey, who resigned.. Challenging incumbent Wanda Bartholomew for the two year county clerks office is Raymond who is currently a Martin, Manti Police Officer. Martin, a Manti resident has also worked for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and in farming. Mrs. Bartholomew, a veteran to the clerks office and a Democrat, was appointed in December to fill a vacancy left by the retirement of Democrat Wayne Beck. On the state level, Senator Cary Peterson has filed for District 28(Juab, Sanpete, Sevier, Millard, Piute, Wayne and Beaver counties). He is unopposed as of Monday. There have been no filings for either District 69 (Part of Sanpete, Emery and Carbon Counties), now held by Rep. Ray Nielsen, or District 68 (part of ar 14-ye- ar Sanpete and Sevier, Juab and Millard), now held by Rep. South Sanpete School Board seats include, one board member from each Precinct No. 2 (Mayfield, CenterfieldandAxtell) and Precinct No.3 (Gunnison No.l and Na.2 and Fayette), currently held by Diana Spencer and D Dwight Inouye. Voters will also be selecting national and state leaders and be participating in a retention election for incumbent Supreme Court Justices and District, Juvenile, and Circuit Court Judges whose terms are expiring or who otherwise are required to run if they file. PLEASANT contract city police protection from Sanpete County Sheriffs Department could save at least two Sanpete cities money. Sanpete Sheriff Chuck Ramsey reported Friday that he had contacted Mt. Pleasant, Ephraim and Manti cities by mail about the proposal that would offer those cities the same patrol coverage as they are now receiving from their own municipal police departments. Sanpetes two largest cities, Mt. Pleasant and Ephraim, could save considerably over present costs. Manti, however, the countys third largest city, would be paying slightly more because of that citys lower salary scale, he said. full-tim- full-tim- full-tim- Within the next few weeks the sheriffs office will be increasing its patrol coverage to 21 out of every 24 hours daily. Crime was up 54 percent in the county last year, he observed. Countywide law enforcement protection could be contracted in more than one way, but Sheriff Ramsey said the only way he would be able to offer the service was through the county Sheriffs Department program as outlined to the cities involved. He expresed his concerns that if the proposed tax initiative were to pass, the county would lose $416,000 in revenues that would impact law enforcement and roads. No information was available on the amount of police coverage municipal police departments now provide for unincorporated areas within the county or for other cities who either have no local police coverage or on an emergency basis. Conservation seminar set MANTI The Sanpete Soil Conservation Board is sponsoring a short seminar in conjunction with Monsanto Chemical Co., April 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Manti County Inn. The main topics will be conservation compliance aspect of the 1985 Food Security Act, along with related topics of weed control, conservation tillage, and CRP. There will be time for an open discussion on any topics that concern local agriculture. Featured speakers and discussion leaders will be: Steve Dewey, USU extension weed specialist, Harry Riehle, SCS agronomist, and Matt Chemical Monsanto Swan, Specialist. Dinner will be provided by Monsanto. full-tim- News scene Moroni Stake sets conference MORONI Stake Conference will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, at the Moroni Stake Center according to Stake President W. Kim Aagard. The Saturday evening session will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is for all stake adults. A Priesthood Leadership Session will be held Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. The general session will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. A Jr. Primary will be held for children ages 3 to 6. There will be no nursery. Ricks student charged after firing at youth A MORONI Ricks College student was charged with felony assault, following an incident here Saturday that injured a Moroni youth. Daniel L. Kauvaka, of Rexburg, Id., was freed on $5000 bail from Sanpete County Jail Sunday where he was held following his arrest about two hours after the youth was injured. He will appear before Judge David Mower, Tenth Circuit Court, at 10 a m. April 13. According to Sanpete Sheriff Chuck Ramsey, Kauvaka and a male companion of about the same age were shooting a 22 calibur rifle at the city dump here about sundown Saturday when there was a verbal altercation with three youth. The youth left the dump in a pickup and camper vehicle followed by the two men. Three or four shots were allegedly fired from the rifle at the vehicle, the sheriff said, with one of the bullets striking the back window of the camper, penetrating the vehicle and passing through both the front camper window and the rear window of the pickup. The injured youth, one of three occupants of the pickup truck, was struck in the head by glass fragments. He was taken by his companions to Sanpete Valley Hospital where he was treated and released. The suspect was arrested by Sheriffs Deputy Kay Larsen. Investigation continues into local burglaries An investigation is continuing into the alleged MT. PLEASANT burglary of Caseys Lunch March 27. Police Chief John Christensen said $140 was taken from the business sometime during the night. Entrance was gained through the front door which was pried open. Two other Main Street businesses, Country Squire and Mt. Pleasant Dug, also had signs of attempted forced entry but apparently no one entered the buildings. Chief Christensen said.
