Or have they considered how four lanes can access into heavily trafficked Highway 89 at the citys busiest intersection? At least one highway fatality can be attributed to traffic on that street. unrestrained north-sout- h While UDOT has concentrated on the hazardous conditions on five blocks of downtown Mt. Pleasant they have overlooked some obvious flaws elsewhere. Safety should also be considered at Highway 89 and 700 South, the access to the new North Sanpete High School. Not only is the intersection poorly marked for exiting the highway to the east, but there are no turn lanes and poor visibility from the south where traffic approaches at 55 miles per hour creates a potentially dangerous situation. Back on Main Street, safety should be considered when winter months bring heavy snow deposits. five-bloc- free-flowin- How many realize that the middle turn lane just created is designed to be a dumping spot for snow? That cerUDOT by tainly appears to be more hazardous than angle parking if it obstructs motorists view and narrows the driving lanes. Snow on the citys Main Street has never been a problem to UDOT because the Mt. Pleasant City crews have taken the responsibility for removing it (not just piling it in the middle of the street as UDOT suggests). We would like to see less UDOT concern about the advantages of parallel parking and more concern about the real streets. safety hazards on We feel people who live in rural cities like Mt. I believe that the officers of the cable company are unaware of our problems. Therefore, I have written a letter to the president of the company at the following address: Mr. John C. Together, maybe Sanpete County can bring our problems to the attention of someone in the cable company that can get something done. Very truly yours, Edward R. Gilman five-bloc- Businessmen have expressed concern about the lack of patron parking and are considering taking the matter to the UDOTs head office. However, with people parking on both sides of the street, there did not appear to be a shortage of parking places during the week as had been expected. And the state law exists to protect the states liability in auto accidents should they occur, he said. According to the state law, Local authorities may by ordinance permit angle parking on any roadway except that angle parking shall not be permitted on any federal aid or state highway unless the Department of Transportation has determined that the roadway is of sufficient width to permit angle parking without interfering with the free movement of traffic. Although that law does allow local government to exempt streets from parallel parking, it may only be done with the approval of the UDOT if that agency deems the road wide enough for angle parking to be safetly employed. Citizens attend Ephraim council to discuss budget ii by Evelyn McNeill Twelve citizens attended a second citizens public hearing and review of the 1987 budget Wednesday night. The budget hearing was held prior to the regular council meeting and citizens raised questions about the taxes, tourism and encouraged a EPHRAIM conservative expenditures. However, there was no official protest to the budget which was later passed by the council. The hearing and council meeting EPHRAIM Dr. Don L. Lind, NASA astronaut, will speak at Snow College at a special assembly on Thursday, September 25, according to Dr. Alvin Green, Snows Dean of Students. " Dr. Lind will speak in Snows ' auditorium at 8 p.m., and the public is invited to join with faculty and students for this activity, Dean Green said. There is no admissions charged. He was also a member of the astronaut offices operations missions And Mt. Pleasants Main Street is not wide enough to safely support angle parking, Davis said. Davis said a nine-yea- r study indicated 40 percent of the citys accidents occurred as a result of angle parking within the targeted business district caused by failure of cars exiting angled parking spaces to , yield to oncoming traffic. Angled parking restricts the view of those backing out, especially if the vehicle is parked by a larger vehicle, he said. Even though there has been a lot of negative public sentiment on the parallel parking since the Main Street was repaved and the new parking enforced recently, I cant see any reason to change back to The angle parking, Davis said. people are fighting state law, he said. He also noted Mt. Pleasant was the last city in the district to change. Davis said some people were concerned that Price in Emery County was still allowed angle parking on its .Main Street business district, but that street is not a state road any longer, and angle parking was resumed after the road was taken over by the local government, he said. Davis also said parallel parking would facilitate snow removal on Mt. Pleasants Main Street. The center lane will allow thj state some room to store snow scraped off trraffic lanes, he said.
