Show Novemlxr 2H, - 198-- The Pyramid - Page Five Hawks win opener; host doubleheader MT PLEASAN- T- The North Sanpete Hawks rallied from behind Wednesday night to edge the Emery to give new head Spartans basketball coach Mike May his first win at North Sanpete. The Hawks will be back in action with a double header this week On Friday night they will host Wayne and be back on the home court Saturday to host Pleasant Grove. The Hawks fell behind early in the first quarter and with 3:04 left were behind But with some ball hawking from Scott Cook and some scoring by Ken Pay the Hawks were moved to within before falling liehind at the quarter mark. It was Pay and Kim Wilkey doing the scoring in the second period as the halftime ended in Hawks up The Hawks went to a stall but the Spartans grabbed a lose ball and tanked two more. After a time out Wilkey came back with two to keep the Hawks in front with 2.04 left At the : 18 mark Pay hit two from the line to pace the Hawks at but Emery came right back with 2. The Hawks lost the ball on a bad 45-4- 50-4- 8 47-4- 2 1 49-4- 4 pass and Emery gained control and brought the score to within three with 12 seconds left But the Spartans turned it over and Tom Seely who had done a great job in the center post all night iced two pressure shots from the line to put the Hawks up The Spartans got the last basket and the game ended 49-4- 6 50-4- 50-4- 12-- 3 0 0 26-2- favor the Spartans. With teamwork a little more consistant in the third quarter the Hawks defense cooled the Spartan attack and the score was tied at the 3 25 mark at The Hawks led at the end of the period Emery came right back but Doug Thornton dropped in two, Wilkey came back with two more and Cook pitched on from the line to put the of 30-3- 40-3- Hawk grapplers open at Millard MT. PLEASAN- T- The North Sanpete wrestlers will meet their first opponents in a match with Millard at Fillmore on Wednesday, according to Coach Richard Tree. Theyre one of the tougher wrestling schools, Coach Tree commented. They traditionally place high and a couple of their wrestlers placed in the state tournament last year, he said. But we have some good kids, Darren Walker, David Hill, Todd Lee, and Jason Sunderland, just to name a few. They will have to come through, he commented. Snow beat Dawson College (Montana) in the tourney opener on Turkey Day by a score of 81 to 68. Snow led throughout the game, hitting on 33 of 43 foul shots and 25 field goals. Sophmore forward Brik Eyere led all scores with 23 points, followed by freshman guard from South Sevier High, Rhett Parsons with 14. Scott Horse Whetstone had his career high of 13 points, and Greg Humphreys, 6 foot 7 inch forward had 11. Snow dominated the smaller Dawson team on the boards, with 7 inch Lance Scott pulling in foot seven rebounds, behind Whetstones 1 Snow topped Central in what Wyoming College turned out to be a close finish. Snow was up by 19 at one point, but let the lead fall in the last five minutes Humphreys had 27 points, Eyre 22, Parsons 15, and Steve Bruce, freshman guard from Dugway, finished with 12 Snow finally comes home after four games, and will host the Snow place, 92-8- 8 College Invitational Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at the Activity Center in Ephraim. The tourney will be a true round-robiwith each of the four teams playing the other three. The team with the best record will win the tourney. Snow opens Thursday against Cochise College of Douglas, Az., then plays Phoenix College Friday, and gets another chance at Casper on Saturday night 1 Kim Wilkey, No. 23, pulls down a rebound for the Hawks and along with Doug Thorton, No. 10, paced the Hawks to narrow victory over the Emery Spartans Wednesday night. The Hawks will play at Wayne Friday night and be back home Saturday night for a 7:30 tip off against Pleasant 50-4- 8 Grove. There will be two games each night at 7 and 9 pm. Snow will play the later game each night. The confrontation, originally 62-3- 5 scheduled for December, was moved up so that Moab could keep a tournament commitment. Moab was coached by Todd Peterson who played forward for Manti High in 1972. Making the strong start for Manti were Glen Squire at center who scored 10 points; Jeff Bennion and Rory Nielsen at forward, scoring 10 and 6 points respectively; Stephen Braithwaite and Dave Simons at guard with 8 and 2. Also on the board were Daniel Maynes with 8 points, Kurt Dean and Shand Rasmussen with 4, Tyler Nielsen with 3 and Donnie Naylor and Dave Ogden two apiece. High V scoring man for the evening was Mark Walker of Moab with 14. Manti was also decisively victorious in the JV and Ninth Grade games that preceded the varsity. Next Friday, Nov. 30, Manti will e travel to Gunnison for a game. The first quarter of the varsity game found the teams playing even ball of a fast, scrappy type.
