PLEASANT- - growers went against the national trend with production down 18 percent while the national output was up five percent. Farm prices in 1980 started off badly Sherman but picked up after mid-yeasaid. For the season, prices received will average near record levels. The upturn was a result of decreasing supplies of competitive meats. Sherman goes on to say that at the same time farm prices were on the rise, production costs were also setting new records and managed to squeeze much of the profit out of the turkey industry. The year ahead is uncertain, Sherman says, but growers can expect feed and other production costs to rise, but can also expect good prices for the 1981 turkeys because the red meat supply will be down.
