In spite of a Few bugs yet to be ironed out, the system is saving lives and providing much more benefit to all the county's residents, Nordell said. e He agreed that getting the number out to all residents of the county who need it, has been one of the drawbacks, but said efforts have been made to make it available and are going forth to publicize it so that all will be able to have it at hand if needed. Moroni City has a 911 number to reach COMSAN. Manti, Ephraim, and Sterling are to use the local emergency 5 number and the rest of the area is to use toll free e number does not appear The in the new telephone directories but Mountain Bell is advertizing the number and sending out letters advising its customers to write the number in the front of the books. Central Utah Telephone Company put the number stickers on all of its books before they went out to customers. Nordell said where once the only toll-fre- 835-234- toll-fre- communication the Sheriffs Jeep Posse had was by CB radio, now each of the units can be in constant and immediate touch with all the others through the system, when needed. Chief Dispatcher Barry Bradley also is able to have reports of conditions at many places throughout the County at his disposal as posse members report to him from whatever spot they might be. Any possee member on a weekend jaunt with his family would be able to provide weather, road, and other information for immediate dispatch to emergency units such as ambulance, law enforcement personnel and to anyone else needing, that information from the COMSAN system Nordell said. Nordell, who has been a member of the Search and Rescue for many years, credits Eugene Williams and Ben Kjar both of Manti, with being the two who have put forth the most effort to get the system for Sanpete. All members of the system are volunteers who take part in the unit because of their love for Sanpete and its towns and people, Nordell said. Each posse member must have 40 hours of police training and is not paid for any of the rescue efforts in which he is involved. Many hours are spent whenever there is a crises involving the unit. Life-fligh- t, n County residents only have to recall the day and night search efforts carried out at Wales Reserviou two years ago for two drowning victims to realize tne effort, time, and money contributed by each member of the posse. Posse members are often involved in not only life and death situations but sometines what are for this area almost routine rescue efforts in behalf of stranded hunters and travelers unfamiliar with the rugged mountain surroundings. Other chores more on the routine and humdrum side are the traffic control assistance at Fair time and for the Manti Pageant each year. Nordell reported that the $200,000 worth of equipment which COMSAN now had will make the Search and Rescue unit more efficient C30O PQC3 19 THE CRSSRAiS 36 NORTH SI STATE, STATION FAIRVIEW WINTER HOURS 6 A.M.
