Show COAL MINES fi WELL i jl cidie inspector Ins pettit completes examination of carbon cou couy afy properties and ret ports on conditions there ia plenty of coal in the mines plenty of mines to supply the ft market and plenty of men for the vork the only necessity is in gettin ting enough cars to handle the ou output t the denver and rio grande lu been exerting every effort according to pettit to supply enough cars and have kept a stream of oal eoal ping from the mines in carbon county to the market in salt lake city and other cities of utah but iiii it is a x question whether hether the railroad will ivill be able to handle the coal ahen hen the real demand seta sets in many blany of the hit luge ge consumers have been laying in a supply of coal for the te months when there may be a stringency trin gency in salt lake city and the coal yards are looking ahead when the first real winter weather comes tomes along bringing heavy snows on the mountains it is expected that the company will ha e trouble in a carrying the coal to the market though no serious shortage hortage is feared g most of the mines have increased their output during the last year 1 sm pettit though the output m from the mines of the utah fuel 9 company is somewhat less than a year ago owing to the closing down of mine no 5 at sunnyside Sunny side other mines have greatly increased their ft output and the total will be many thousand thou sandi of tons greater than a year ago the no 3 mine of the utah fuel 9 company at sunnyside Sunny side has recently been openly again and no R 5 has bas 9 been teen closed down no 5 is directly ver no 3 and mining in each one ras was being pushed a year ago no 3 vas was then closed down don and work was lb kept up on oil no 5 it was decided u the company that it N be bet 4 ter tu mino mine in no 3 the lower vein 4 first and later resume work ork on no 5 no 5 vai the larger pro producer dULer 41 ad and therefore the output i of the utah fuel company compan yat at sunnyside Sunny sid side has been fut don do n about abou tons to the day 4 1 I find that there is practically no VIYo wyoming ming coal coming into the utah f market an and thit that he utah mines are 4 supplying the const consumers imeri of this state Thou Tho Landi wandi of of yet et undeveloped mining property just ts osgood good as that now being mined is bin idle but it 13 i a question oi i of only a comparatively shot t time when alice will ali be opened up one by one on ind and thu tho COQ coal from utah sent to to jthn r states in the intermountain inter mountain country wintry 0 the output of the pleasant valley mine of the union pacific coal company at scofield beld ha nearly tre bled in tho the last year yeav during the year 1907 this mine produced tons but the total this year will run close to tons the coal from this line is being used almost wholly by the harriman ILir railroads and is being shipped direct to the southern pacific thousands of tona tons are bein being stored away bior uga during the winter when it may be found difficult to procure cal cial 1 ille he opening of the ogden gateway ay to utah coal mines has already proved a great benefit and is partly responsible for the increase in the output the mines now have a larger ar field to supply and are now shipping coal throughout idaho and other tie neighboring ng states the advance this year will probably be far eclipsed in 1909 through the opening of the northern market and the development of new mines 1 I he independent company is shipping about six hu huna nurell tons a day lay from kenilworth and it is rn belief that this output will ill be greatly increased next 5 ear u when hen new equi equipment p will be put in the sunnyside Sunny side mines are shipping about 2100 tons a day for general consumption and most of that supply is going to salt lake city and ogden the situation in the mines of utah is most encouraging the owner era are taking every precaution to protect their men and to put a high grade of coal on the market unless some unforeseen emergency arises I 1 believe uta utah i n will get through this winter without any serious coal shortage it is ib always a good thing for the large and small consumers to lay in a supply of coal for the winter months instead of waiting vai ting until the coal is really needed but in m my y opinion there will be no serious serious shortage tins this winter more men arc are being put to work daily by the coal mines of carbon county and of the state the companes par es being hooded flooded with a deluge of orders for the fuel according to J A pettit wile coal mine inspector N who ho is back at salt lake city after an extended trip through the state pettit recently visited the sunn side mines finding them in good shape and with the gradual increase inthe in the demand for coke the seventy oens which have been lying idle for some time are being repaired and v m ill bo be put into commission as soon as po possible sible A number w ill start up this tilts eek on november pettit will give an examination for nine foremen at dragon with the object of securing men for the gilsonite and ela tente mines in that district another examination for mine foremen and fire bosses iv will ill be given at castle gate on december ad |
