And the members I talked to were sold on the collegiate tournament of player, who remembers he is a guest the club. and may not share the prima donna attitudes of a few of the touring pros. And the exhibition of golf shot in the two days convinced the gallery there won't be a shortage of good pro tournament players in the future. The Sun Devils, whose highest previous finish was a third place tie last year, overtook the defending champs and the rest of a balanced field with incredible strength in both singles and double competition. "Everything had to go perfect and it darn near did," offered an elated Arizona State coach Marty Pincus. "It's been an incredible day all around. Now it's off to the NCAA," Pincus offered. Arizona State piled up 19 points in securing its first crowd while 13Y1J placed second with 14, Utah third with 12, while Arizona finished with 11 and New Mexico 7. The Sun Devils adcled three points to their first day total of 11 in the singles competition as Mark Jolley, Jan Eric Palm and Barry Young each captured honors, making the doubles somewhat academic. Spotlight Match In the day : s spotlight match, Joffey called on a powerful service and crisp volleys to win his second straight conference No. 1 singles crown. The Arizona State stalwart outlasted BY'Ll's Mike Nissley, 6, to vault the Sun Devils into the driver's seat entering the doubles. Joffey pulled away from deuce with the first set tied at and added a pair of aces down the stretch to register the verdict. Breaks Service broke Nissley Jolley's service to grab a 3 sectaul sct lead and coasted in for the final, but Jolley broke Nissley quickly in the decisive third set and continued to hold service for the victory, "I let down a little in the second set, but I knew I could break him at least once in the third set," Jolley said. "I started getting leg cramps near Ile end, though, and just had to slice my serve in there easy," he said, munching on a chocolate! bar. first-plac- e 5, 5 5-- 6-- 3 "It was a lot tougher this year," the defending champion noted. "All three matches were equally difficult. There were no outstanding players and anyone could have beaten anyone else on any given day." Palm coasted past BYLl's Jim Robin the No. 4 singles after bins, Robbins upended the southpaw, last week in a dual meet. "The secret was to break his service, which I couldn't do on the fast courts last week. The courts were slower today and I broke him when I had to, late in both sets," Palm said with a Swedish accent. 6-- 4, 6-- No. 6 Singles Young startled Arizona's Steve 1 straight sets to claim Briggs in the No. 6 singles crown, while New Mexico's Mike Huffman turned back Utah's Jim Greenberg, in the No. 3 singles.
