Show NOVEMBER 11, 1986 CURTIS STODDARD is smoothered by several Laker defenders in games opening offensive series. Stoddard suffered a neck injury that took him out of the game for the rest of the day. DAVIS Classes offered Olympus defender gets ready to pounce on him. Brent Hadley tries desperately to hold the Titan out. Braves move into 4-semifinals A go. L.iston made it Now the question was if Bountifuls defense could hold. On first down, Larsen w ent to the air again, but his throw was picked off by Jacobs at the Oly 24. and he returned it to the six. A penalty moved the ball back to the 10, from where Smith picked up five yards on fiist down. On the ensuing pitchout, Madsen fumbled the ball, but got it right back and kept the drive alive. Following a procedure penalty, Covey moved to the one yard line, but Oly held on fourth down. With 1:59 left, Olympus needed something big. On second down, Larsen rolled right and hit Burton for a 25 yard completion. A spearing penalty on Bountiful (another real beauty of a call) moved the ball to the 42. But Larsens next pass was battled up in the air, and eventually intercepted just before it hit the ground by, who else Madsen. Bountiful coach Larry Wall took Madsen's fine performance in stride, saying hes been playing solidly like that all year. Brent did a great job filling in this season, and we just played well defensively when we had to. Coveys passing was also impressive, particularly the two TDs and clutch first down tosses down the stretch. We had a super effort today he sailed afterwards, mobbed by two local television station crews. The Olympus corners kept collapsing on us, fearing our run, so we just took advantage of that and passed outside. Its great to win, but we sure can improve on this performance for next week. And finally, the Braves have moved into the final four, proving that they belong where everyone in preseason thought they did. 20-1- Continued from previous page died when Sharif Hadley inter- cepted Larsen at the Oly 45. Neither team did much in the third quarter, at least not offensively. Bountifuls second possession turned out to be disasterous, however. After failing to move from their 20, the Braves were forced to punt on fourth down. But the snap never reached the punter, who was tackled at the Bountiful 13. And this set up the controversial Olympus touchdown.. , As the fourth period began, Oly moved for a first and goal at the Braves one yard line. On first down, Larsen's handolT to Chris Hansen popped loose and into the endzone. But the official ruled that Hansen had possession when he crossed the goalline, disallowing a Bountiful recovery and awarding Olympus the score. The ball clearly was never in Hansen's possession, but the sidejudge who saw the play refused to overrule the referees decision . The play was reminiscent of last year's folly against Alta, when a Bountiful defender was clearly with on a possible interception that would have gone for a TD. But the officials pulled ostrich moves and claimed they never saw it. For awhile, it looked like this non-ca- ll would also spell Bountifuls doom. But wait. . . The Braves moved 70 yards in 14 plays to regain the lead. The key play was on third and nine from the Olympus 39, from where Covey hit Crawford for a 21 yard gain to the 18. Covey scrambled to the seven. Smith moved to the four, and Madsen scored from there with 4:43 to in Layton City Water Aerobics classes are now being held at the new Layton Surf N Swim Pool. Waite, who has been associated with many fine football programs around the state, was bold but confident in saying, Davis has the finest football program in the entire state. Whatever that Davis thing is, the Darts have it, he said. The father said he would be eternally grateful for what the Davis staff had done for his son. With a crackling voice he said, Theyve made my boy a better man, a better person because of all the long hours he spent with them. Another father, Sherm Hoskins, met and thanked Dickson before he left turf on Friday. Mr. Hoskins is the father to Trevor, who graduated last year and Tyler who has now plaed for Davis varsity for two straight seasons. Many people dont realize how lucky we are to have the kind of coaches there are at Davis, said Hoskins, Its amazing to me what they were able to do with this group of kids this year. Theyre the same guys who almost won a state championship last year and they took a group of kids whose intensity level as a whole wasnt what it was a year ago and got the most out of it. I for one, will always be thankful for the time and effort they gave to my boy. Jimmy (Dickson) and all the coaches took some flack for losing a couple of games this year, but they stuck in there. Theyll get a letter from me for all the things they gave both my boys. Hoskins, like Waite, stated that his boys are better men for having played football at Davis High. Hoskins, an player his senior year at Davis High under Gerald Purdy, still thinks the world of his coach. My boys will always have that feeling for Dickson and the others, he said. Still another father who approached Dickson after the game, was Patrick Bates, the father of Scott Bates. Bates grew up in a small community in Washington and compared that positive experience to that which exists in Kaysville. Bates came to Utah on a baseball scholarship to BYU in 1962 where he played under Glen Tuckett. About Scotts football experience in 86, Bates commented, This Dickson guy is really giving those boys a real slice of what life is going to be. Everything they (the coaches) do transcends football which is great, but things like their study table and other things are going to be invaluable down the road. My personal feeling is, and I hope I'm right, is that this particular groups of kids may have learned more about themselves and grown more going rather than being right now. I take my hat off to that program and thank it for what its done for our family. all-sta- te 7-- 4. 10-- 1 October athletes of the month honored Two more outstanding monthlong performances are being recognized by both the Refiex-Juurn- and DAVIS LORI TEMPLETON J and J Engravings and confidence lends as much as any- thing to her teammates. This is the continuing effort to honor the top male and female athletes within the coverage area of the Reflex-Journa- l. For October the male award goes to Laytons Carl Darby for his heroics in football and the female is Davis Lori Templeton for outstanding accomplishments in the sport of volleyball. Darby, a junior, was the perfect answer for Layton High when Richard Lovelace and eventually William Reid went down to injuries. The talented runningback helped keep the ball rolling during the month of October, despite the fact the team lost their final two games and failed to make the playoffs. Things could have been worse without him. To start October he piled up 142 yards against Box Elder and I touchdown. For the month he ended up with 404 yards rushing, eight touchdowns scored the five catches for 145 yards. Templeton, a senior, earns the award because of efforts to help pace the Lady Darts to a 3 record in Region Four volleyball. That was good enough for second place behind Viewmont. Templeton, perhaps one of the finest setters in the league, has been a two year starter for the dart volleyball team.
