Show OCTOBER 7, 1986 Darts rally to beat unlucky Vildngs, 22 19 By KEITH DUNCAN The Darts on the other hand are now 0 in Region Four and are getting ever so close to another showdown for yet another region championship. The game of the year will pit them against the Highland Rams on Thursday, Oct. 16, a 3:30 p.m. battle in Salt Lake City. The final week of region action sends Highland to Bountiful and East comes to visit the Darts, "We dont have an easy one the rest of the way, said Davis Jim Dickson. "It we dont answer the call one, like sitting on a keg of dynamite all night, youre bound to do an awful lot of thinking about improving yourself every day in practice and every night in a game." Down 0 at halftime, Dickson remembers one thing he said that may have sunk in more than anything else. I just asked the kids if they wanted to go to the homecoming dance after a loss. Not a whole lot needed to be said after that, Dickson said. Davis received the opening kickoff and started their first touchdown drive from their own 30 yard line. The key play was a 43 yard scamper by Jackson and moments later Warden went in from five yards out. But despite all of this, the Darts were able to play well enough in Viewmonts final offensive drive to yank out the victory. That final Viewmont drive was a story within itself. Davis Rob Warden had just capped off a 69 yard scoring drive to give Davis a 22-1- 9 lead with just over seven minutes to play. Thats when the Vikings took over, starting on their own 30 yard line. Another key play was a Jason Bumingham to Jimmy Allen pass that netted 13 yards and a first down. Moments later Clayton Walker picked up another first down with 1:51 left that brought Viewmont to Davis 22 yard line. But thats when trouble hit the Viking offense. First a motion penalty and then a holding call, moved them all the way back to Davis 40. Bumingham, with time running out, hit Allen again which brought his team to Davis 18. But there were only 14 seconds left and no time outs remaining. That left it up to Bumingham, who rolled to his left on the games last play and let go a prayer into the end zone. The big difference is that we put the ball in the end zone early against Box Elder. I think we also gained some continuity back too. The loss of Richard Lovelace hurt us for a few games because it took us out of the rhythm we were in. But against players and coaches were just thankful to still be undefeated in league, while Viewmont boarded their bus home bewildered they'd come so close but had let it slip away. Viewmonts Bumingham, who did a commendable job on both sides of the football all evening, commented, We pushed them up and down the field all night, but in the end we got robbed by a couple of calls. We still feel like we can play with anyone in the state, there just isnt a powerhouse this year. But Bumingham did note too, that it was important his ballclub win their final two games to have a chance in the state playoffs. Joe Wood says his LAYTON Lancers have the edge back. We lost that little something against Clearfield but we gained it back at Box Elder on Friday, said the second year head coach. In getting that little something back as Wood called it, Layton steamed to 29-- victory over Box Elder and improved their region record to The Lancers will travel to Jordan High this week for a practice game, but will come back home on Thursday, Oct. 16 to host Roy. Then on the following Friday they will take on Bonneville, who presently sits atop the league standings at 0 coming. There were plenty of mixed emotions after the game. Most Davis Can the FalCLEARFIELD cons do it again to another Davis County opponent? With six games behind them, Clearfield has won three of those games. And all three have been against Davis County high schools. This Wednesday they will play the Bountiful Braves in Bountiful Elders first offensive series of the By KEITH DUNCAN The season continued to have its ups and downs last Friday as Clearfield failed to score in a 24-- 0 loss to Weber High. It was the third time the Falcons have been shut out this year. That loss at home dropped the and Falcons region record to overall. After the Bountiful game, Clearfield will come home to host the 3-- 3 Bonneville Lakers and the following week will close out their region competition against the Box Elder Bees in Brigham City. Bonneville leads Region One with a record of 0 and Clearfield has had a knack of knocking off teams when they were undefeated. Already this season theyve given both Davis and Layton their only 3-- defeats. Darby. For the evening, Darby played like hed been in the starting lineup all along as the junior fullback rushed for 143 yards on just 12 carries. It was also a big victory for the Layton defense as they gained their first shutout. Wood says the defense has played solidly all year, mentioning that Clearfield had only 34 total yards outside of three big plays. If we dont give up the big play, said Wood, Weve got a better than average chance of winning football games. The Lancer defense flexed its muscle to start the Box Elder game as the Bees couldn't do much after getting the ball first. Layton even fumbled in their first series, but a Darrell Gray interception stopped any hopes of an early Box Elder score. The Lancers got their ground game clicking in the second offensive series as Darby and Reid (rushed for 18 yards for the night) tore open big runs after big holes were opened. Finally it was Reid breaking one from 23 yards out on d the right side. The snap was on the PAT and Layton led 1 bob-ble- 6-- 0. Big Jason Barker, the up and coming Layton lineman, intercepted his second pass this season on Box Elders next play from scrimmage, giving Layton the ball deep in the Bees territory. But even though Troy Murray helped move his club down to Box Elders five yard line, his field goal attempt went wide to the right to end that scoring attempt. Late in the second quarter after the defense had held Box Elder again, the Bees punted from their own end zone and after a 17yard Reid runback on the punt return, Layton had the ball on Box Elder's 25 yard line. Moments afterwards, Reid scored his second touchdown of the night on a 14 yard scamper as he threaded through Box Elder defenders like a needle through cloth. The PAT run was no good and lead going into Layton held a halftime. 12-- 0 THESE HOMECOMING BEAUTIES added a little spice to the Darts homecoming festivities on Friday night. Laytons defense got stiff again, causing a fumble during Box second half. Even though a Murray touchdown pass was called back a few plays later because of a penalty, the junior quarterback and kicker did connect on a 33 yard field goal to give his team a 15-- 0 lead. Perhaps the play that broke the Bees back came in the closing moments of the third quarter when Darby burst up the middle, broke no less than five tackles and eventually outran his Bee opponents 54 yards for Laytons third TD of the game. Murrays kick was good and Layton led 22-Darby, just a junior, gave the Bees something they werent expecting as he continued to have his best game of the season. Laytons final touchdown came after a brilliant 46 yard pass from 0. Murray to Chris Parrish. The latter caught the ball over his head as Murray hit the outside shoulder just beautifully. Later Murray scored on an eight yard run in which he escaped five would-b- e tacklers. His PAT was good and the final verdict. Layton led 29-All of the kids executed well against Box Elder, we couldn't have been happier, said Wood. For the evening, Layton racked up 397 yards of total offense and put 15 first downs on the record. Murray went 7 for 13 with 113 yards and no interceptions. Parrish caught four passes for 84 yards. 0, Theres no question we gained our edge back against Box Elder, but we cant lose it again this late in the season or well be packing it up early, said Wood. Darts cross country coach runs his workouts, too By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE Punishment, the kind cross country kids absorb, is something that Roger Buhrley says is fit for coaches too. The first year Davis High mentor certainly doesnt attack his counterparts in their coaching techniques, but insists his is one of self-inflict- ed pain. Perhaps unique, Buhrley puts on his cross country atire like his kids do and gets out each afternoon with his kids to workout. Whether two miles or seven, Buhrley sustains the abuse every one of his kids do. With a smile on, Buhrley stated, Its not something every coach does, because most of them are smarter than I am and have figured out better ways to motivate their kids. I know Lynn Dubois (Viewmont) doesnt run with his kids, but year after year hes got teams who are at or near the top. Each year it gets harder and harder to keep up with the kids, I really dont how much longer Ill do it. But right now I get a kick out of running with them and I believe they like it too. Each day it's a chore to keep from passing out in the locker room after Ive told the kids it really wasnt that much of a workout. Buhrley, who has been out of coaching for a few years, says he is glad to be back. His last stop before Davis was at Clearfield High where he helped bring some life into the Falcons cross country program by helping them win a region championship. Like at Clearfield, Buhrley works under the influence of John Flint who came to Davis himself in the fall of 1985. Flint became the head track coach when he made the transfer. Commenting further on his working out with his athletes, Buhrley stated, The big positive about running with the kids is that they realize you are willing to take the same punishment that they do. I guess there are negatives too. If all of the kids arent running with me, then sometimes I miss things I could have seen in a car or on a bike. But overall its been pretty effective and the advantages certainly outweigh the negatives. Buhrley has found out that the two or three years he has laid off of coaching, running with his kids has rededicated his body to pain and injury. The former Weber High graduate gets excited about coaching cross country because of the quality of kids that come out. Those that make up the 1986 team include seniors David Hopper and Fred Volcansek; juniors Andy Bailey, David Hunter, Chris Hogan, Curtis Keith, Mark and sophomores Keith Hansen, Andy Hogan and Corbin Christensen. De-Prie- st Buhrley has been impressed with the performances posted by his kids thus far, singling out the five juniors who perhaps have been the most consistent. Wele got the makings of a good team this year and even next year, said Buhrley, But youve got to respect what Lynn (Dubois) does at Viewmont High. He is probably the best cross country coach in the ranks. Lynn could take any 10 kids in the school and by the end of the year have a real solid club. 4-- A Also battling the Vikes and the Darts for the region crown are the Highland Rams, the defending champions. Maybe Davis cross country strength comes from the fact the Darts have five runners finishing within thirty seconds of each other. The Kurt Blacks and Justin Julan-der- s are gone, but the overall depth is back in the Darts favor. Realistically I dont expect our team to vie for the region crown this year, but funny things can happen in cross country. If we were to win it, wed have to have five guys finishing very close to each other. Maybe it could happen, only time will tell. |
