FARMINGTON When we were babies and small children we were held close-lovcuddled, nurtured, says Carol Lewis, Davis Council on Aging homemaker services supervisor. When we age, we still have a great need for the affectional touch. There is a huge difference between the intimate sexual touch and the affectional touch, she continues. She refers to the belief held by many that as women age, they are perceived as sexless. That thought isn't held by close friends or family members, but by the general public. The elderly need some form of affection, Mrs. Lewis stresses. Dont childize an older person. Boy friend and girl friend are not adult terms. Other advice: Understand you dont have to know everything about anything. Assume nothing about an older person, regardless of how well you know them. But on the other hand, "try to be an advocate for the older person. Those associated with the elderly should be willing to take risks, she says. Risk talking about intimacy or whatever the older person wants to talk about. So much of life has to do with intimacies. Intimacy is a vital part of life.
