THE LEGEND of Arthur begins when, as a young boy, he draws the is the sword Excaliber from a stone where it was placed by magic to help England find its new king. A Kaysville resident for seven years, she's pleased that her w ill first solo show in Utah would be in her hometown. SHE ATTRIBUTES most of her talent and early training to her mother, Dorothy Argyle. An artist herself, she taught Karen and her sister Ann, basic art skills from an early age. On family campouts while the men were fishing, there were a lot of hours for learning color, light, design, and observing nature with an artist's eye. Karen's first solo show was at the age of 16 in Kansas City. The director of Swope Park Zoo saw her pen and ink drawings of animals and invited her to do a show of zoo animals. ALTHOUGH she has taken classes from Roger Cushing, Nancy Lund. Carl Purcell and Osral Allred, Karen is basically self-taugh- cream and men's underwear to advertising. Op. 70. by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Handel (1685-1759- ) wrote the Opus 6 in a one month period during 1739. All the concerti feature a concertino of two violins and one cello in contrast with the full string ripieno. 1 ) ANTONIO Vivaldi's ( Concerto Grosso, Op. 9, No. 3. begins dark and impassioned, after which the solo violin enters in a more lyrical manner. Its final movement is one of repressed excitement with a violin solo which begins innocently, but which prog 1678-174- resses to a state ot agitated ornamentation. Dmitri Shostakovich the most famous of Russia's 2()th century composers, continued the national heritage developed by Tchaikovsky. His Chamber Sy mphony is based on (1906-1975- ). the String Quartet No. 8" and also carries the name Sinfonietta. Composed in I960 "in memory of the v ictims of vv ar and facism." it is intensely poignant and personal in its slow movements, and driven in its faster sections. TCHAIKOVSKYS (1840-1893- ) Souvenir De Florence. Op. 70. was in June. 1890. hut was revised by the composer in January 1892. It was warmly received w hen it premiered in November of that year. The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields was founded in 1959 by some of London's leading orchestral players as a small, conductorless string group in the forefront of the 1950 s baroque revival. Since composed then it has made more than 300 recordings and has toured the world extensively. IONA BROWN was asked in Neville Marrinei . founder and director of The Academy ol St. Martin in the Fields, to diiect its string section. In 1981 she was also appointed Artistic Director of the 1974 by Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. She is a popular soloist w ith till ma- jor British Orchestras and is in great demand all over the world as a director. Of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the "Washington Post" says: "They have brought the fine art of chamber orchestra performance to near perfection." "The New York Times" says: " he playing was civilized, polished, elegant, yet never slick or driven. The phrasing was musical, the ornamentation was consistent and ample without seeming over1 done." And the "New York Times" writes: "An exquisite evening of music.
