Show DAVIS NOVEMBER 20, 1985 REFLEX-JOURNA- sports Keiths comment corner By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSV1LLF -- - The ultimate has come to pass, ONK OF HIGH SCHOOL'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS, MOST glamorous and most sought after team trophies, the prep football title, is finally on the line this week. Yes, Davis will be there and theyll be playing the Black and Red again. 4-- BUT WAIT a minute. The Black and Red isnt Alta, in fact even sport the latter a in its name. its a team that doesnt ALTA II S certainly had Davis number in past years having knocked them out of the state playoffs on more than one occasion. And perhaps there were those Davis followers who were rematch and chance for something anticipating a Davis-Alt- a called revenge. But forget the Hawks and get used to Warriors, it's Weber who Davis will be playing. And it wont be Davis who will be out for revenge, but rather the Warriors have pocketed the revenge motive having been beaten by Davis five times in the past three years. ROD BOCKWOLDT and his staff probably hate the Brown and Gold as much as Davis cant forgive Alta's Black and Red. "We want to shake it off (referring to Davis' dominance of the series). said Webers Bockwoldt. "And I cant think of a better time to do it. DAVIS JIM Dickson, on the other hand, isnt all that excited about Weber's opportunity to have the revenge motive. To be truthful, it scares me a lot. Its something theyll be using all week long to jack up their kids. I wish we had it on our side, said the Dart mentor. a few years Weber and Davis began playing in back and during those first two games. Davis totally dominated. But last year in the playoff, the Warriors came close Then to begin the 85 season, Bockwoldts but still lost club nearly pulled off a win but lost in the last few minutes, pre-seas- intcr-regio- n 27-2- BOTH OF these guys are extremely competitive but theyve got the touch with kids and a talent of blending together plenty of good help on a coaching staff. battle so good, Perhaps the thing that makes the Davis-Webis that the state has two A-- l Class programs going at each other. Its like Bockwoldt said, Davis has always been top class and defensive coordinator. BOCKWOLDT took over a Weber program a few years back that was always competitive, but lacked what it took t5get on top. Jerry Coggins, Joe James and Hal Lewis were the guys who preceded Bockwoldt, all having been great football minds but guys who never were successful in getting the job done like Bockwoldt has. Why the success? It boils down to having good kids to work with, going through a tough schedule (which included Davis), surviving a tough Region One and then peaking at just the right time in the state playoffs, said Bockwoldt. er BY GOLLY, its Weber High. Can you believe it? Its the same ole Black and Red colors, the same kind of team that plays physical football and a squad that can seemingly put the points on the scoreboard. a 12:30 p.m. encounter at This should be quite a match-up- , Rice Stadium this Friday on the U. of U. campus. 14-- ON FRIDAY these two head coaches will be debuting in their first ever state finales as head coaches. Only Dickson has been here before as a coach having been present as an assistant under Ward Sawley in the 1983 championship game. But Bockwoldt has smelled the championship game aroma as a player. In 1971 as a sophomore at Layton High School, Rod played under Dick Bubak whose Layton team went to the finals in football against Viewmont. But like Dickson, Bockwoldt has never won a championship ring in high school football as Layton lost to Viewmont. In 1983 Davis lost to Alta with Dickson as the WITH ALL this action between the two schools, Bockwoldt and Dickson have become good friends. They both love the sport with equal admiration and ironically theyre both about the same age, Dickson is 35 and Bockwoldt is 31. Both started their coaching debuts at junior highs where both did extremely well on that level. Bockwoldt got the jump on a head coaching position one year earlier when Weber hired him three years ago. This is Dicksons second season. 6. 4. now were right with em. BOCKWOLDT FURTHER stated, Maybe weve copied Davis, maybe we havent. But Ive always respected their program. Its fun to play em because they arent cheap-shartists and they give you a great game everytime they go out. Ive heard how close their kids are and how close their staff is. Well, Im proud to say weve got the same thing. Our kids love each other so much they almost do their homework together. Our staff gets along great. Last Friday night after the games, we went out and ate together and had a super time. I GUESS weve found something that has made us more than competitive, but something that has us winning. I just wish I could put my finger on it so I could market it and make a million bucks. I just believe Fridays game will pit two class programs right across the line from each other. Lets just hope the best program wins it. IN COMPARING a little further, the two schools do have a lot of similarities heading into Fridays game but they also have their differences. One key difference for the Darts is their -wing attack, deadly in itself. Then when you put Blake Hart m that attack, look out. The last time these two clubs got Hart didnt play because of August together in injuries. Weber had better be prepared for him. But one thing Weber has is unquestionable momentum. Davis does too after having won 2 straight, but its not the kind Weber has right now. The Warriors are flying high after having beaten Roy, Box Elder, Hillcrest, Olympus and Alta in succession. In the past three games, theyve whomped on their Salt Lake opponents and Bockwoldt isnt sure his club has peaked even yet. Its scary to think where they could go if they continued to play like this, he said. ot pre-seas- THE FUTURE even looks brighter for Weber as both their records. sophomore and junior varsity programs posted Ironically both of those defeats came from Davis High. I dont think you can say our staff has turned this program around, because theyve always been competitive. But weve personalized with our kids and maybe that has been a difference, said Bockwoldt. 7-- WHEN DICKSON was playing high school ball in Idaho, a and therefore he never had a playoff system was chance to participate on a championship team at Burley High School. Thats why I envy our kids who get that chance. They deserve it more than anything, said Dickson. non-exista- nt double- PERHAPS MY wife, (Debbie) is more excited than I am, continued the head coach, Probably because she is so aware of the time I put into this thing. She is happy for not just me, but for all of the kids. For Davis High, Dickson believes its time to cash in on the rewards after a long, long season of hard work. Nobody in the state has worked harder than our kids and if they can go out one more week and bust their tails, then the bragging rights are theirs. pre-seaso- n, 1 WE DIDNT come this far to rest on our laurels. We didnt spend all Saturday afternoon cleaning the practice fields of snow for the fun of it. The three and a half hours of scouting Weber on film on Sunday wasnt what I considered fun. Weve got to work harder this week than in any other. When you get to the dance, you dont change partners. You always dance with what you brought, Dickson said.
